Hey everyone,  I'm new to kayaking and would like to find people to go out on the ocean with.  I have fished salmon and steelhead for years in the rivers with a drift boat but really want to do this ocean thing.  I have a Hobie Mirage Outback with all the whistles and bells so I have the gear I just need a partner.  I have tried to find a guide but I work weekends and couldn't find one.  I could meet anywhere on the coast and have availability Tuesday-Thursday every week.  I'll buy the beers at the end of the day.

Welcome! That's a nice boat you've got. You are welcome to join me down here in coos bay anytime. I fish on the weekends mostly. I sneak away during the week if the conditions allow, though. There's a handful of us NWKA guys down here that fish a lot. I'm sure they would invite you along too. We boast one of the most noob friendly surf launches around! I don't even think it's fair to even call it surf really.

PM me if you ever get a weekend free to head down to the coast.

Welcome!  I am in Florence and planning to be out for salmon mid-week a lot in the Siuslaw later this year and at times getting close to the ocean doing that, and also getting out into the ocean if/when the weather permits and especially coho are open there but not in the river.   Are you looking at any specific ocean locations off the coast?  cheers, roger

Baby steps Grasshoppa. For most people, it's a good idea to spend a good amount of time on flat water first. It will give you the chance to get to know your boat, physical abilities, and figure out the challenges that come from fishing from a tub of plastic. It's also a great idea to practice self rescue a few times before heading out into the big blue. It's also a good chance to test out your immersion wear. Maybe you've already done all this, but if not it's a good idea. You should check out the ORC (Oregon Rockfish Classic) in a little over a month. It's pretty newbie friendly and is a great way to get some salt time in.
