Hello all,
I have been lurking for a while looking at all of the great information on the forum. I am looking to purchase a kayak. Thinking about a Tandem. I have been scouring the forum and seeing what people are using. I am thinking that the Hobie Outfitter seems pretty attractive. I am hoping I can finance one (anyone with experience with that?)
I have fished salmon, steelhead, and ocean here in the northwest since 98 and am looking for a bit of a change now that I have kids (10 and 4). I have fished Frenchman's from the bank (about the only fishing the kids will tolerate besides the lakes). I have seen a few kayakers up on the south end. Were these guys trolling for salmon? I am really excited about the idea of Kayak fishing. It sounds like there are opportunities all around the Portland Vancouver and coastal area.
Once I get my Yak, what is the best way to get started? Classes, club get togethers? I see there was a get together near Frenchman's a while back. I want to make sure I know all of the safety stuff before I take myself or my 10 year old out in the Columbia.
I plan on taking a trip to next adventure, do they or any other local dealers finance kayaks? (2600 is way more cash than I have on hand)
I do have some stuff I could trade if anyone has a Yaks they want to get rid of. (I have a real nice Miller MIG welder setup, and some nice woodworking tools Delta planer, Jet 18" bandsaw, Leigh dovetail jig)

Thanks for letting me join the group

Welcome, Wally! You'll find many helpful, experienced kayak anglers here. You should definitely search through and read up - and don't be afraid to ask questions...

As for the tandem Hobies, you may want to look closely at the oasis, that's what I have, and really enjoy for taking my kids out fishing. From what I understand, the hull differences provide a much drier ride, especially in the front cockpit!

The biggest suggestion, check out Next Adventure - they have demo models available and can assist with you on finding the right kayak for your needs. I have no idea on financing...

Good luck!

Sam

+1 on the Oasis. Really a much better choice for any conditions other than the warmest weather and flattest water, because the front cockpit will be wet on the Outfitter.

Welcome to the forum. Where is "Vantucky"?

I've heard good things about the Oasis from reliable folks - the wife and I are getting one Saturday.
