Howdy!

I've just recently found out that some people are crazy enough to fish from kayaks...sounds like something I want to do  :)

So I'll be reading absolutly every thread on these forums to try to figure out what I might be possibly getting myself into! I'm not new to fishing, so I at least have that going for me. Hopefully I won't bother you guys too much with my pesky questions.

Adios!

Welcome to the site! Have you started boat shopping yet?

No sir, I haven't.

Unforntunatly I was blessed with the obsession of researching EVERYTHING before I make any kind of purchase...ever. Be it a television, family car, double cheeseburger...you name it. I gotta find out how many people like it, how long the person who made it has been in business, etc.

Its a curse, and I think my wife loathes me for it.

But, since you asked, maybe you can kind of point me in the right direction. I'm not looking for the Porsche of Kayaks, but I'm not looking for the Yugo either. I'll mostly be in freshwater since that's my stomping ground, but I grew up fishing on cattle boats off the coast of Cali, so eventually making it out past the breakers is a possibility. I'm 6' tall and weigh 230lbs, so I've got to consider my size.

Have you been in a kayak before? Its fun to hit your local shop and kick the tires a bit before buying. Next Adventure is worth the drive up to portland or the kayak shed up in hood river. Id say some of the most popular boats are Hobie, Ocean Kayak, Wildness Systems, Malibu, and Jackson. The hobies start at 1850 and run up to 3000, that's probably your Cadillac. The others will get you on the same water just as well but you're paying for hands free fishing and a little more speed with hobie. Ocean kayaks trident 13 or 4.3 ultra and wildness systems ride 115 or 135 are also really nice boats. There are plenty of other options out there too but those are some or my favorites. Did you have a budget in mind?

Budget? What's that?

Actually, my budget is whatever the Mrs. lets me spend. I'm actually thinking about a used yak to get my feet wet. But we'll see. First I need to convince her that I'll:

A) use it
B) not kill myself
C) find some place to store it (currently in an apt, might get a monthly storage unit)

You may want to try before you buy.
Several places will rent you a kayak for a day or two for about $50 a day. That would allow you to try different sizes, models, peddles or paddles, etc. Save you having to plunk down a big wad of cash. Then if you find out its something you want to pursue--the money can start flowing. And it will.......but you'll be having the time of your life.
  Welcome to the cure..........

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Hi Burl,

I've been reading this site for over a year but never put anything on it.  But saw your post and thought this was the perfect subject to say something on..  I fished from kayaks for a couple of years, usually from lower end kayaks and finally took the plunge to a hobie with the mirage drive.  Really wished I had done it sooner, regardless of the cost.  I would rather peddle around trolling with my Hobie than a 20K bass boat or any other kind of boat.  If your wife questions the cost, take her out with you in a rental and there won't be any debate..... except for which one she is going to buy (I bought the outback and then she bought revo 11).  Definitely worth the extra expense to have both hands free for fishing and being able to go into river currents I would be afraid of with a normal kayak.  Good luck researching everything!!
