I'm looking for some rivers near the Spanaway area to take my boys fishing. I found Puyallup River, but can't seem to find any access points to fish from the bank. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On the puke, levee road anywhere. Best bet is take 410 first exit, hang a right. once you get over the bridge turn into moma stortini's. park on other side of the road. Walk across the road down past moma stortini's there is a river trail, it's 3 miles long on both sides of the river. after 8/1 you will see plenty of people lined up. If you google map momma stortini's in sumner, puyallup, you can find it that way.  Half ounce weight is the usual for the drift.

I would highly recommend taking your boys there on a work day prior to 2pm. After 2pm or any weekend/holiday it is a complete clusterf*$%.

With it being a pink year, there will be double the morons out there.  I'm talking everything from bubba that owns the river to illegal aliens with 15 foot surf casting rods.  Avoid it if at all possible.

whitten - I second what Lee and Dirk said. Depending on the river flow, and if your boys are young, I wouldn't take them downstream of the Meridian bridge - generally its a wader show, steep banks, and strong current.  There are shallow bank areas upstream of Mama Stortini's, just walk a ways till you find them.  One area farther upstream is at the 128th/ McCutcheon road bridge - but I had my truck broken into there, so I've never tried that again.   The Carbon River (upstream of Puyallup river at Orting) also has good access at the sewer treatment plant - I haven't checked the regs, but the Carbon usually opens up a little later.

That would be interesting trying to float the Puyallup once the Pink season opens up. While fishing the bank I once saw a jet sled go by at about 30+MPH. He didn't care about the lines in the water :)

I wouldn't float that river during a pink run in anything smaller than an amphibious vehicle, with reactive armour. Unless you went down to the last pullout on the side of river road heading to t-town. But why not just peddle up into the mouth.

Which brings up a good point and one more warning. DOes anyone know a definite date when the lower puyallup opens? The regs say from the mouth of the white to the carbon on 8/1. If only that area is open at the start. I wouldn't take my worst enemy down there.

Last I read, the state and the tribes were still arguing.  The tribes want exclusive rights to everything below the white river confluence for like 60 days.

THe puyallup date are now official.
The Puyallup River will open August 1st above Freeman Road, and August 16th the entire river will be open from 11th st. bridge in Tacoma, to the mouth of the Carbon River in Orting.

There will be a closure on August 11th (tribal Chinook fishery), and a total of 14 days in September for netting. The netting will happen two-three days a week, and will most likely be Sunday, Monday, & Tuesday.

I was thinking of fishing the mouth this weekend, launching from thea park in tacoma its about 500 yards to the mouth. The king run is already going up the river, and they close out the bay as of 8/1. So really this is the last weekend when you can get right up to it.

Damn I misunderstood the bay dates. I thought it opened on 8/1.

A buddy of mine caught 2 pinks off the beach at Dash Point this morning. I will give it a shot at Dash when I pull my pots after work today.
