I'm pretty sure I saw the Lowrance Elite-5 DSI Gold  on sale at Cabellas two days ago for $369.00...if anyone is still looking for a deal.

The transducer is too weak if you fish deep water.  I use the HDS5 2nd gen instead.

How deep is "deep water"? I've been using mine at about 150-160 feet and it seems to work well. Does the HDS5 just wire directly into the Elite5?

As far as battery life, I've been out 6 hours and it never died on me. By the way, I recommend using gel cel batteries, even though they are a little more expensive they can tip and roll upside-down without spilling.

Here is the link to the battery kit I used in my Pro Angler 12.

12V 9AH Waterproof Gel Cel battery has stood up to 6 hours of trolling. I can't say the same for my back. Didn't make it out on the water this morning. :( Getting old's a bitch. ;)
