So I plan on trolling around the mouth of the Nisqually tomorrow. I only have a few hours and really just want to get the new kayak wet but I am hoping to get into some fish. Any tips?

You been there a few times already, right? (Luhr Beach Launch) just be careful of the tide change so you don't have to go around the mud flats. Oh wait u have a hobie so it won't be deep enough at flood.
Watch out for the seals and the nets. And try going upriver in the main channel.

Or go just north of the mouth parallel to the nature reserve and fish the channels indicated on the maps at salmon university. Or cross over to the islands and fish the spots indicated on those same maps.

Take a drift sock. That seems to work best right in the area of the mouth.

That's all I can think of.

Nope didnt really expect to much. I trolled two different colored squid jigs behind a kone zone. I varied my depths up a bit using a 3oz ball on a 4' leader off a 3 way swivel from the rest of the rig. I trolled for about 2 1/2 hours. I have seen a few reports but not much is being caught yet may have to try again.

I trolled all over the place up and down the channel. saw two other boats fishing but no one was landing fish. And yep I know all about the mud flats. I left on an outgoing tide and planned to come back after it had come in a little bit. With the tide in it is about 3-4 feet of water on top of the flats. I came back at negitive tide and just paddled around and up the channel back to the launch. I could pedal that hobie around all day.

After i posted that last bit, i ended up talking to two coworkers who fish that area frequently. Neither of them have caught, or even seen fish there within the last week. Maybe you;re just a bit early?

Yeah in about two weeks it will really heat up I think. Although the pink run on the nisqually is not as large as it is on some of the other rivers.

I was talking with a guy at work who said he had a little luck out there, he said look for bait schools in the deep water(150-200fow) then mooch herring under the schools

Try a little further north. The shore line between Solo Point and the Nis flat puts out a few. I typically fish North of the point between the doc and parking lot, or along the edge of Ketron Island. The pinks will start showing there in about another week or two, but wont be thick until near the 1st of Sep. Our run south of the narrows is a bit later than the Commencement Bay area. Look for them at the southern tip of Ketron, and the shallow flat at the mouth of Sequalitchew Creek. You'll see the schools finning around on the surface in 10' of water or less. Take your fly gear and throw a pink Clouser, or pink Shock and Awe for some real fun.
