I got a kayak for Christmas and had no idea where to start for information and assistance getting it ready for fishing! With help from two forum members I was out on the water in just a couple days! I wanted to give thanks to those two they are Indyflyer and C_run. Here are two pictures of my maiden voyage! I had plan on doing a float down the Luckiamute to try for some ducks the next day however my shoulder was hurting so I stayed home and a good thing! I was reading the news and heard our lil dog whimpering so I went to investigate to find our lab choking on a bone. It was far down her throat and lodged in a way nothing could force it out. Luckily I was able to dislodge it and she as able to recover. If I had gone hunting she may have been dead when I got home. (That was new years eve and my goal of the year being my first year hunting was to harvest something) It was still an amazing year! Quit smoking, Quit chewing, got Married to an amazing woman, met a lot new people and hopefully some new fishing and hunting buddies. I do have to say it I was a bit nervous out on the kayak for a while, I tried to troll and didn't catch anything! Does anyone know the max depth in Walter Wirth by chance? Also is there anyone around Salem who likes to waterfowl/upland hunt via kayak? maybe even spring turkeys?

Glad to help you get on the water.  At Walter Wirth my FF showed a max depth of 20', average about 15-18' down the middle, the south half and around the island about 4'.  If you check the Leaburg Fish hachery hotline, 541-896-3294 you can know when it will be stocked each week.

Glad you dog is doing well, that could have been tragic.  Was your shoulder sore from paddling?

Thanks Cpt! I am still a bit nervous if I was to catch something lol not sure how I would boat it while staying on course without a net lol. I guess it will just take a lot of practice and patience on my part. The hardest part was getting in and out. Perhaps next time I will take the rod holder and put it in after I get in myself so I am not trying to get my leg around it.

I see this as a real issue for re-entry. If you do fall out you should carefully take into consideration access and egress. I like to keep one side of my yaks clear of any hardware that might make re-entry (or falling out for that matter) any harder than necessary. If its uncomfortable to get in and out under great conditions imagine what it would be like under the worst conditions. Glad to hear your k-9 friend is ok, it's crazy when things work out for the better.

Ahhh Walter Worthless.... Can't remember what the max depth is, but I do know that I've spent waaayy too many hours on that little lake.  It's a perfect lake to get comfortable with kayaking though.  I would guess that it's max is around 20 ft.  Welcome to the curse!  ;)

Just saw your thread , Josh. Way to get right out there and get started. It took me two years to drill my first hole in a kayak but you're getting right in the swing of things. I was nervous being in on that.

That looks like Cascade Park, East of the airport in Salem. ;D Welcome aboard and while I'm in Salt Lake City right now, I plan to be back in Vancouver Washington/Portland area very soon. I'm not beyond driving South to meet up sometime, and trying some old waters. I grew up in South Salem and Keizer. Of course then, we would tube (kayaks were for Native Americans and Eskimos) the Willamette River from Wallace Marine Park to Spongs Landing.
