Thought I would share this because it was a close call...... I purchased a 125lb kayak hoist off Amazon.....

http://www.amazon.com/ProSource-125-Pound-Garage-Utility-Storage/dp/B003I7CB4A/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1384800556&sr=8-5&keywords=kayak+hoist+lift+storage

The pro's: Works great, easy for 1 person to use. Install wasnt too bad considering the overkill I did with lag bolts for the 2"X 4" spreader beam.

The con's: The provided straps that wrap around the hull suck! Do not use them if you purchase this item.

In a nut shell this is what happened. We (the GF and I) got everything all setup and ready to lift, I did think to myself that the hull straps were kind of cheesy but they will work to get everything mocked up and in position then I could come up with some better straps. "BAD CALL!" Just as we got the kayak in the raised position and stood back to proudly admire our team effort work the plastic buckles on the hull straps snapped sending my prized outback to the concrete floor then which destroyed my twist and stow rudder assembly  :cussing: It's a good thing that GF is quick on her feet, it all happened way to fast (seconds), her or myself could have be taken out. So just thought I would share to always go with your gut feeling and venting makes me feel better ;D. On another note my replacement parts are already on the way......Thanks Langston!!!!!!!

If you have not already done so, suggest writing a very negative "customer review" and post it ASAP.......Amazon will not sell crappy products if they are aware of it.
Safety is paramount for a hoist and you in no way overloaded the "advertised capacity".

I had a similar experience.  I made a hoist to store my 13' Trident overhead in my garage, suspended by 1" tubular webbing through the scupper holes.  One time I pulled the kayak up too hard, and a snap link hit a hardware store pulley and broke the pulley.  The kayak came down, hitting my head with a glancing blow as it fell.  Fortunately neither my head nor the kayak were damaged.  But I'm a lot more careful now when raising and lowering the kayaks I have suspended in my garage.  I replaced the pulleys and rope in the system with considerably stronger ones, and I stay out from underneath the kayaks.

Oh you know I was all over that! I was honest about the whole system, the good and bad and kept it professional as well expressed my serious saftey concerns on the provided straps.

Good call.  Kayaks hitting you in the head are bad news, whether in the surf or in your garage.
I would suggest the garage aspect gives you a little more control of the variables.

I think you need a refund, plus a little extra for a new three-pack of boxer shorts.

This is the best hanging storage I have been able to find.  Excellent quality,  and the company was great to work with.
