We are almost done with 2013 and on to the next year. I've spent the latter half of this year preparing for a 2014 Cascadia "Big Fishing Year" where I hope to catch and harvest as many species of food/game fish and invertebrates as possible in Oregon and Washington state during the 2014 year. At a minimum I would like to get 50 species but I am hoping for more than that.

A major goal of this adventure is to catch as many species as reasonably possible from a kayak. In order to rack up species I am going to need to spend a lot of time on the salt working reefs for various rockfish and greenling species. Admittedly I've spent way less time fishing the salt than freshwater so any kayak anglers that wouldn't mind some company when they go out after halibut, lingcod, and rockfish I'd love to join you.

I will try and keep you all appraised of my progress once the new year comes. I plan on trying to document this adventure as much as I can with video and photos and sharing my experience with others. In order to facilitate communication I put together a website where you can keep tabs on my progress. You can check it out at http://www.bigfishingyear.net

I hope to see many of you on the water over the next year and I know I can rely on your support and assistance in helping me reach my goal. I am planning several big trips this year away from southwest Washington and I'd love to have some company.

Tight lines!

I've added the "O-fish-al" Big Fishing year calendar to my website. Right now I only have Jan-April but will continue to update the calendar as time goes on. If you have any suggestions, technique hints, or helpful information feel free to email or reply on this thread.

This is really cool - I'm impressed!

I will bookmark your site but make sure to make regular posts here to remind us. I'd love to have you come out with us from Pacific City as part of your Big Year if it works out. I'll send PM next time we head out.

Are you only kayak fishing, or is that just your primary means? I.e. will you be bank and powerboat fishing as well?

If you're only kayak fishing, well, good luck with the tuna! :)

Good luck, this is a really cool idea.

Looked over your site - keep up the good work.

I would be interested in a blog entry detailing your motivation for your Big Year. Why are you doing it? How are you doing it? (i.e. how are you funding it), etc.

Sweet I'd love to join you out fishing haystack.

I'm not doing kayak exclusively but trying to use my kayak as much as possible over powerboats. I also have Water Ready pontoon for fishing the rougher waters. Also as you point out some species will be easier from a powerboat.
