Trolling Housing for My GoPro

I decided today I would build a trolling housing for my GoPro camera. I really wanted to get some video of salmonids and tuna underwater this year. The main body of troll housing was built of 2" pvc with a round cap and the terminal end was build using a 2" to 4" coupler. To stabilize the housing while trolling I mounted a tear drop boat zinc on the bottom to act as a weighted keel. I used stainless steel hardware to mount the boat zinc or for attachment points. I painted the top black and the kept the bottom white to resemble a fish and added a fair amount of flashing tape with the idea of using the housing as a fish attractor (similar to a flasher).



The GoPro camera itself resides in the 4" end of the coupler. It is secured using a GoPro threaded tripod mount and 1/4" stainless hex nut. I also drilled 1/2" hole to allow me tighten the GoPro camera on to the mount using a screwdriver. Depending on how the fish react to the mount I may end up building another stealth version (all black) if I find the fish don't like all that flash.



The whole thing cost me about $23 with the boat zinc and coupler contributing the most cost. It weighs about 16 oz so will probably only be useful in trolling for kokes, blackmouth, ocean salmon, or tuna (not from a kayak). I may play with using it to troll upstream in the Columbia as well. I plan on taking it out in the next week or two for a trial run. I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm looking forward to some cool pictures.  You could make a metal one out of pipe which doubles as a downrigger ball.
