Seriously though, this stuff is used to package just about everything heavy nowdays.  Any appliance store, electronics store, furniture store etc is gonna have a crap ton of closed cell foam that they pay to have disposed of.

If you're given the option to pick thru a bin, just remember that it comes in different thicknesses and rigidities.  I prefer the stiffer, larger cell stuff.  If the piece you get is too thick, it's really easy to pare it down with just about any sharp blade.  I use a bread knife.

I checked best buy and they said they dont have any and had no idea what I was talking about. neither did home depot and lowes. makes me wonder if its just people in salem. I asked do you have any closed foam or packaging foam from recent shipments, and they said no and have no idea what I am talking about.
Not sure what kind of transducer you have, but if it is the long narrow one I have an extra puck that came with my install kit i can mail you. If not I'm sure one of my floatation pads for the PB is due to be discarded. They have the same material in them.

Do an internet search for the foam material.  Doesn't cost much more than $5 for that.  As far as tools try Harbor Freight if your on a tight budget.  They have sales all the time.  Looking forward to seeing your mods to the kayak!

Why not cut to the chase and use Duct Seal from Home Depot found in the electrical department...its made by GB  Gardner Bender....maybe $3.00 for a 1 pound pug and be done with it!
I used this method on my old Outback and it works really good.

So I asked the clean up guy at work to keep an eye out for this stuff.......I now have a pile of it. I tried to post a pic but the watch proxy at work blocked it i think.

Wow thanks for the information! I may have to look into that duct seal! I cant wait to get the kayak fully ready to go! anchor, drift sock, just so excited and it may even be used as a hunting vessel (to and from locations probably not shoot out of lol) *crossing my fingers for a quick bear and turkey season so I can go fishing!* I might try and draw a rough blueprint of my plans for the kayak to get some feedback before I mess anything up lol.
