Fishing at Merwin today, got caught in a pretty good storm. I have a Columbia rain hat that wasnt cheap...it works OK in a straight down rain situation....this was not that. This is a round floppy hat,the problem is that any wind at all lifts the brim ...result being that it basically just keeps the top of your head dry. Would like something that stays put, doesnt let water down the back of your neck...insulated preferably or able to wear with a beanie.

What do you use and where did you get it? Thanks !

+1 on the OR hats, a little pricey but they sure keep your head dry

I love my Outdoor Research, its not the Seattle somb just the original. You really can't beat Gore-Tex. keeps your head dry in the rain and cool in the heat of the summer.

I rock a boonie hat, never lets me down.  even when its pissing rain coming in sideways,  they aren't waterproof, but they are water resistant and keep you pretty good.  It cinches down behind your head so you don't lose it when the wind blows, when its cold out I just put a beanie or balaclava under it.   they are also cheap and available in more than just military camo patterns.

In warmer weather, The SS is a great hat. It's Gortex and has an chin strap.

But my favorite hat for cold weather is this one:

I use this for salmon fishing and crabbing and it has always kept me dry and warm. The flannel lining is really nice, and the brim of the hat channels water to the back.

If you want the back of your neck to be dry in the driving rain, you're gonna have to go with a hood.  But, that can feel confining and it's hard to maintain audible perception with a hooded coat.  In the really crappy rain deluge scenario, I have my hooded PVC jacket, but usually all I need is the Goretex Outdoor Research Hat.  If the weather is bad enough that the OR hat doesn't do the job, I'd rather come in for drinks and other entertainment.

Tilley hat. Water proof and well made. It is worth the money.

Another happy OR SS owner here, just cant beat that lightweight, stuffable, waterproof, quick drying hat.
I use it at work and play. But when the weather is really bad....I also can't say enough about the Grundens hat as linked above. I am old, wear hearing aids and glasses, I can work all day in driving wind blown rain and stay warm and dry under the Grundens.
