I know the seas have been angry
Just curious if anyone got out this weekend for lings ???? ???

   If not ------it'll happen soon.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

The ocean is still standing on end down here.  One storm system after the other has kept the big swells and choppy conditions coming.  Hope it settles down soon.

I've been packed and ready to hit it since Saturday but the sea state is way past my comfort level. MS shows some calmer conditions later this week/weekend.

I've been doing the cabin fever thing-  watching the crappy weather, big swells, and tides at Westport.  This Saturday it looks like the swell will be about 5' at 17 secs, but there will be an ebb tide with current peaking at 4MPH at 8:35AM, with an easterly wind, so I wouldnt want to be out too early - maybe 10 -ish launch, to get pushed out to fish the slack water at about 12:30?  As usual, its tough to make a call on whether to go or not until later in the week.

Rev - I wouldn't do 6x13.  The rule of thumb is you dont want the period less than twice the swell height.  While 6x13 might fit this criteria, its not very fun.
Personally, I look for swell 4' or less, and period 3 times height - many times I've been out conditions have gotten worse, so this allows for that.
Just as important at the Westport jetty is the current and the wind.  I stay away from currents more than 1.5-2 MPH,  and winds much more than 10MPH.  Winds more than 10MPH will add another foot or more of chop.  When the wind is blowing hard, the direction of the wind is important also - it can push you into the jetty, out to sea, or add serious chop...

Where do you guys find current forecasts? Or do you just estimate based on the tides and your experience in the area?

I also use DeepZoom (on my laptop - i dont think its compatible with Apple) for current/tides; and like SailFlow (on my iphone) for wind.
I also check Magicseaweed and National Weather Service Marine Forecast to double-check swell and wind predictions.

fished from the rocks at westport tuesday... on ling love.  The water had no visibility.  Next time I see a 6x13 swell I'm gonna give it a go in the kayak... could be fun.
