I'll be going on an albacore charter out of Newport on August 31 and staying a little north of Waldport. We'll be there for a few days, any good kayak fishing spots in that area?

Tidewater crabbing/perch fishing

Above Newport are the Big Creek Reservoir and Newport Reservoirs #1 and #2.  About 5 min from the waterfront.  Some bass but mostly obese hatchery trout.  8 miles East in Detroit is the Olalla<sic> reservoir, known for its' planter trout and big Bass.

10miles North is Depot Bay.  Lots of bottom fishing structure out there.

Quick note about Olalla, it's a non-engine powered lake.  It's not super big.  I haven't been out on it since I was a kid, but I don't remember it being windy.  Not sure what the detroit reference is, no place around here.  The lake is actually private property, but they let people use it anyway.  (Boise Cascade)

If you go on the Alsea Bay, Stay away from the mouth, it's VERY dangerous.  The locals call it the Widowmaker.  (I dated a girl that went to school there.)

Yaquina Bay in Newport is large and safe.  I've never been on the salt, but I'd be comfortable dropping in there for my first time.

I've never been on Big Creek, but I have lots of friends who have, and fish it from time to time.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll check it out.
I've spent plenty of time out in the ocean on my kayak, but I'll probably be alone and would use extra caution at a place I've never been.

Yeah, Detroit, Toledo what'evah.  One Oregon town named after mid-west city is just like any other Oregon town named after a mid-west city.  ;)

I've always liked to believe it was named after Toledo, Spain.

Might be appropriate given the amount of split shot thown around there.
