Looking to make an attempt at halibut this year if I am afforded a weather window. I've never fished the strait and have a few spots picked out nearshore. I don't plan on venturing more than 3 miles from the ramp but was wondering what the currents are like in the strait? Just trying to make wise plans so I don't get out there and find myself unable to get back.

The currents can get very strong in the strait.

What Lee said (while I was typing) - it all depends on the tides. Try to plan your east-west route/drift to go with the flow.   Check out Deepzoom.com.

Thanks guys. A really cool website. Almost too much data to take in at once. Are the speeds in knots or mph?

Also I assume a 1.5 mph current in the ocean is a lot different than say a similar current in the Columbia?

I believe those speeds are in knots, so add 15% for MPH.
The real difference compared with the Columbia is that you'll be fishing deeper, and you'll need more weight to be able to drag the bottom.  At 100+ feet, bring 16/20/24 oz. or more weights
