Hi All,

We gearing up to show the 'big boat boys' how real men - and women - really fish.
The Sooke Salt Water Series has been going a couple of years now  - targeting different species for each derby to create a fishing series - and this year we are adding a kayak element.
The next (& 1st in the series) is the Sooke Halibut derby May 28/29th.

As well as being in the regular prize pool - an additional prize will be up for grabs to the biggest caught from a kayak (or SUP technically) for each derby*. - As well as the smugness earned from the "you caught THAT from a kayak?... Naaaaa you didn't! type of comments sure to be heard at the weigh in!
*There'll be a weather/wind exemption... ie High wind forecast (15kt+) - prize withdrawn
Prize value approx $200 (+ regular entry prizes)

Plenty of spots with kayak launch-able beaches close by.

Check it out - https://www.facebook.com/sookeseries/
http://www.sookesaltwaterseries.ca/ - needs updating

"Kayak" (and SUP) guidelines addendum/guidelines now posted. With the derby only a week away - here is a set of 'rules' in relation to the derby/series general rules:

or:

Sooke Saltwater Series / Derby– personal watercraft rules / exceptions addendum:

All standard Sooke Saltwater Series / Derby rules apply as posted.

Personal watercraft – herein referred to as “Craft”:

Craft must make own way to the fishing grounds from a publicly accessible launch spot or with permission of the land owner (ie private dock)
Craft MAY be assisted by other vessels to return to beach/launch site, or weigh in ONLY (ie no “mothership” fishing), or adverse weather conditions – but craft must return with fisher and some evidence of catch from craft may be required in case of dispute – photos/video.

West Coast Outdoor Adventure reserves the right to end “prize” offering or withdraw prize, if PREDICTED WIND via Big Wave Dave / Gordons Beach is forecast to be 15kt or greater, fishers must weigh in catch within 1 hour of predicted wind speed increase. (or excess wind/weather in other areas)
Largest fish weighed in before wind safety cut off each day will stand.
Fishers may continue to fish under Saltwater Series / Derby rules and conditions AT THEIR OWN RISK.
West Coast Outdoor Adventure wishes to advocate SAFETY FIRST. Prize offerings withdrawn to deter fishing in adverse weather.

When purchasing ticket – please mention you intend to fish from personal water craft and where you intend to launch.

West Coast Outdoor Adventure and/or the Organisers of the Sooke Saltwater Series are NOT responsible for your safety – ensure ALL regular safety precautions are followed including filing your float plan with someone you can trust and rely upon. Carrying a  marine radio is strongly recommended.

Prize Offered for Sooke Halibut Derby May 28/29th

“Rhino Rack” universal side loader (to assist getting craft on to vehicle roof)
OR
$200 in Hobie accessories
for the largest Halibut caught from Kayak (or SUP!)
as well as regular Derby prizes and bragging rights in front of “power boat” fishers!!
