So I saved up for what seemed like forever to upgrade my starter tupperware, and purchased a new PA14!! I am putting the finishing touches on the trailer I built for it and awaiting the hobie cart to arrive on Tuesday so I can lug it to the water. I have really only fished lakes in the OLY area and a few rivers but want to venture to the sound. I live in the Tumwater area and would like to link up with someone experienced in fishing to the true abilities of my new PA. I will be taking it out tomorrow, probably black lake or ward lake for the fist paddle, but next weekend would like to try something more fun!

Congrats on your purchase! There's some excellent smallmouth fishing on Black Lake. I'm down in Lacey, so hit me up sometime. Not much happening in the south sound right now aside from fly fishing sea-run cutthroat, or flounder. Crab is just around the corner though with Kings right behind!

I only have kayaked for one year with my PA14 and still very new at it, but caught 24 salmon in area 9 where I live.  I can only say I love my PA14 so far and strictly a fair weather fisherman.  I liked to try fish in the river, but have no experience in rivers due to fear of fast moving water, logs, etc.  It is always wise to have a fishing buddy.  If you ever end up in Edmonds (on a calm day) call me and I will hook up with you.  I am still researching the down rigger system.  I would get a fish finder since it is really easy to install.  Nothing fancy or too expensive.  It comes in handy both for fishing and crabbing.  I also got a 5.00 bicycle safety flag and mounted on to an air tight dog food dispenser with screw on top for dry storage.  Got a lot of ideas from Youtube DIY Kayak Accessories.  I have a anchor trolley and an anchor , but have never used it.  I have a sail and sailed in the lake and Sound.  Do not use the paddles too much except to get into deeper water from shore.  It's probably because I like to ride my bicycle.  You will enjoy your PA.  Be safe!

Great, thanks for the response. The weatherman was luckily wrong about today, so should be a fun day to try this beast out. I have a fish finder on the way from amazon (along with the cart), so I will be installing that this week. I do have a question about what type of tie downs to use. I have it on a trailer and was going to just run some orange harbor freight ratchet straps over the yak hooking into the trailer? Is there a better way, or will this be fine. Thanks

I personally don't like ratchet straps because you can tighten them too much. They'll work fine, just make sure that they're good and tight but not compressing your boat. I prefer the hookless standard roof rack style that you pull tight. They have plenty of grab, and there's little to no chance of you over tightening.

Excellent, I just picked some up, although I got the hook end style to I can attach them to the rail of the trailer. I am going to wait on the test ride until I get the hobie cart and go for a long test drive of the trailer. I am very excited about crabbing this season! Do you usually launch at Luer or solo point? The big bummer I have is that I leave June 6th to california and won't be back until about the 5th of July. Will the season still be open at this time?

Careful with the motorcycle ties. The buckles slip! If your gonna use those tie a few overhand knots with your tag end, and check on them after a few miles. Almost lost a Jackson Coosa off Lee's old Civic's rack, and a Predator 13 from my trailer because of that style. Crab typically doesn't open in the sound until July and it goes through the winter. Yes on Luhr Beach and Solo Point. I've done the best at Potlach State park though.
