I caught my first halibut from my kayak this weekend! It's not a super impressive size - about 17 lbs -- but I'm stoked to have caught a halibut and navigated the process for getting it on board my kayak by myself. Caught this one, followed by two more too small to keep, at Whiskey Gulch in 50-55 ft of water with herring. I had taken my sister who had never kayak fished before and she too caught a halibut!

This was my second time fishing the area, having gone the weekend before for the Classic. My hubby caught a 20 lb Halibut during the Classic but I had walked away empty handed making me anxious to go again...I'm thrilled to have caught one this weekend and now want to try for a larger 'but.  Also thrilled to see at least four other kayak fishers at Gulch this weekend!

  Great report Uuqutiiq,

Congratulations on your 1st butt. That's always the hardest one. And there is nothing bad about a 17 pound fish !!! :D :D :D  And your sister getting a 1st-- 1st time out. How cool is that ?? ::) ::) ::)

Looks like another awesome day on the Inlet. Great to hear about so many other kayaker's out there. That was not happening even 3 years ago when I was there. Always a solo trip.

Good luck finding your bigger butt. They are out there.  I'm guessing you've seen a few of Kard's videos ? All I can say is be prepared and ready. Go get 'em....
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Thanks Mark! I've seen Rudy's videos, they're awesome. :) I hope to bring in a 50+ lb butt this year!

Way to stay at it!!!!! I chose smaller prey today. Maybe 5 gallons of herring in Whittier!!  Lol.

Congrats on the first 'butt!!!!

Congrats! As a fellow rookie, I know that first keeper halibut is an exilerating accomplishment. THANKS again to all the veterans for your advice and guidance!

CONGRATS.  When it's a first accomplishment size doesn't matter.  That's a 17# trophy.
