I see guys pulling theirs out before going in through surf.  Since I typically get out in a foot or more of water I was thinking of just using the pedal retainer bungie hook.  Any more risk in doing that?  Thanks for helping a new Hobie owner.

I keep mine in to power through the surf.  When I hit 2 ft of water, I hop out and pull my drive.

Depends on the beach. If you have a near shore break I would always remove it. If your break is a little further out and you plan on getting out in a foot of water or so you can just crank home and press the fins against the hull when landing.
Always leash your drive when doing surf launches and landings.

Thanks guys.  Yes, I'll definitely leash it.  If I pull it maybe I can use this to keep it close to the deck in case of a huli.  I have one with hooks just at the corners.

Look for pics of the bungee I put on the bow of my revo. It makes a great spot to stow the drive while going through the surf.

It really depends on the beach, but most of the time I use the drive to get me through the surf

I pull mine for landing, but use it to launch. I made a solid tether for it, so I just drop it in the footwell and bring out the paddle. Watch the end of the video in the Victory at Sea post to see my method.

99% of the time I have it in.  The "pucker" moment for me is the instant the rudder comes up.

I'm probably not doing the drive any favors but I land on gravel beaches, river banks, etc all the time with the drive in.

As Bill said, the only time I take it out is when the surf is likely to "pound" me into dry beach as it breaks.

From what I've see of your surf landing videos, by the time you've hit 2' of water you're an outie!

Yeah, I just beach my kayak upside down so I can leave the drive in.  Problem solved!

I stole Jeff's bungee idea for my Outback a while back and also added a Scotty flush mount in my front hatch.  When I remove my drive I slide it under the bungee and place one of the drive's metal post (that snap into the hull) inside the flush mount; this really holds it in place nicely and keeps it from sliding around.  It works great even for the inverted beach landing technique...
