Dang.  I'll be coming back from Kodiak that weekend.

Fish can be close.  Then they are easy.  I fish the ferry dock side.  Closer to town,. Try behind and past the ferry dock.  They are right up against the shore line a lot.  Big boats won't go there so you have the fishing to yourself.  You can fish with the big boats but the two times I have gone, the fishing was better away from the fleet and closer to shore.

Last year I had to pedal out to Gold Creek to find them because they weren't close to town.  4 to 5 miles out.  Once out there, just hammered them.

I used herring and a flasher mainly but a size 6 vibrax did just as well.  Frankly if you find them, I think they will hit anything.

Can't go after labor day (or I guess you can) because the seiners start working the fish over the day after.

Highly recommend!!!!

Interested. I should get the OK to unrestricted activity this week so I can relaunch this fishing season.

Well, since I have been basically absent this summer from the kayak fishing season due to an unusually busy and travel laden summer, I will be looking to Valdez to get my salmon fix.  I have been monitoring the fishing reports and will be headed down once they start getting close to the city of Valdez.

Cheers

I lived in Valdez for years and I caught halibut pretty close to the terminal, just behind where the tugs parked.  I usually fished off Goose Island or up in Port Gravina for the big sharks, rock fish and big 200 + halibut. That was with a power boat though. There is some of the best silver fishing  in the state there at the right times.

Awesome timing! I'm heading to Fairbanks on Friday and then we will drive to Valdez on the 5th.  We will be in Valdez for a night or two then heading out for several days.

If you see us out there come and knock or hail for a beer:)
Were tied up on the end of the first dock when you enter past Coast Guard station.  It's the Temptation.  It would be nice to say hi, so if be sure to knock and hail us for a beer!
I hope the silvers are in thick by then because I may sign the girls up for the women's derby.
Cheers!

Its still in my mind......I have to have backup plans incase my goat hunt gets extended a bit.  Going on a 6 day fly in, then....when successful, I have to make a jaunt to the game & fish office to check in my goat and 3 bears.  If that all happens, your bunch will be packing bags to head home by the time I'm able to go.

We'll see what happens....we'll see

That's awesome Akfishergal!  Good timing to get the OK.  For me, everything till now has been warmup.  Here through feeder king season through November is a flurry of multiple options for location and species! I can't wait!

I've only been to Valdez on Labor Day weekend.  For those with more experience, I know its different every year but how early can you normally go and reasonably expect to have decent fishing.  For spotty fishing I can go to Seward. lol.  I LOVE Valdez for the sheer quantity and the massive average size of the silvers.
