I'm new to fishing the sound for salmon. I was just wondering what set up to use I would like to get a little practice in before the coho classic. I've got salmon rods n reels just need to know what tackle to use I've always bank fished the rivers but am now wanting to expand my horizons.

For trolling shipwreck and Edmonds, most people are using a green flasher with a red stripe with a green glow splatterback hootchie, or a purple haze flasher with a purple haze hootchie. I run a downrigger, but a deepsix works well for silvers also.

wannabe semi-pro-tip: Q-cove flashers are awesome ;)

re: Q-coves -
seamar (at least a few days ago when I was there) was clearing out their remaining stock of Q-Cove 11" flashers for $6. I picked up the last of their green/chart colors, but there were plenty other colors/patterns left.

Heh, I don't think fixing it will help figure out all the fishing terms in there :-)  Just amused me is all (but then, I have low standards for that...)

Ok use this http://www.cabelas.com/product/Q-Cove-Jims-Breakaway-Flasher/1364556.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dq-cove%26x%3D-891%26y%3D-51%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=q-cove&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products I use the "red rum" UV one, or the "red rum" glow. "Purple haze" works well also. Q-cove flashers are awesome because they stay on your line, but breakaway so you are fighting the fish and not so much your flasher (less drag).

Here are the hootchies (squid skirts). Use "glow chartreuse spatter" or "UV purple spatter." Match your flasher color.

As for a deep six, it ties to your line and it is able to pull your gear down deeper. It is not as good as a downrigger, but still very effective with coho.

"Shipwreck" is a place near Mukilteo. You will see hundreds of boats out there when the fish are running hard.

If you have a fishfinder, troll around 3 mph. If you don't just match the speed of the other boats.

Ok, there is my lecture. See you out there? I don't know where to catch silvers like many do humpies (shallow water casting), but someone else probably will. Have fun ;D

Wow, that is lots of info.  Thanks...   I'm down in the south end by Tacoma, I'd much rather avoid traffic rather than fight it so don't plan to see me up there very often :-)  I am also still more at the "jigging for flounder" stage of learning this biz :-/  Chambers Creek sounds more likely for me.

Hey Kola16,

Are you trolling these big 11" flashers on your yak? How's the resistance/drag when paddling? I though those type of flashers where no good for yaks. I've just been using the low-drag konezone, but they're not working for me. Our local shop has some hot 11" flashers that are fishing well and I've been wanting to try.

Hey Kola16,

I've just been using the low-drag konezone, but they're not working for me.

Konezone work great, but depends on your application. If I'm trolling herring I prefer Konezone, if a spoon or hoochie then I'll use an 11". They do drag pretty bad and you need a fair amount of weight to keep them down. Downriggers, banana weight, diver, or whatever, it just adds to the amount of drag. You really need a rudder or Hobie to troll those big guys effectively.

I've got a Hobie Adventure Island with the turbo fins, maybe I should give the 11" a try. Right now I have 6lbs with braid on the down rigger. I can get pretty deep with the KoneZone. Are you using 8 or 10 lbs with your 11"?

I run a 6lb ball for both Konezone and 11" flashers. It's tough to maintain proper trolling speeds with a heavier ball, and I'm in an adventure with turbo fins.

I use a 10 lb. ball with an 11 inch flasher. Drag is an understatement especially because I am paddling. I like to paddle with the current, however. Now I have a trolling motor though ;D

Any thoughts on Short Bus Flashers? The guys on Small Stream Salmon Fishing forum rave about them. Cone Zones and Purple Q-Tips..... Hahahaha Hoochies and Side Planers and Aeropuffs, Clown Farts and Plug-Cut Hot Dawgs (I hear they fish these in the lower Sandy.) Each kind of fishing has it's own language. Do spinners ever outfish bait when trolling?
