Been watching Shark Week and gotta say I am trying to wrap my head around why every shark cage on TV is made like a box?

That is the weakest shaped design known to man, especially out of aluminum tube.  Nearly every one shown is bent, or broken at some point during the show.  Might be for drama, or just other..... :-\

A spherical design or even a (multi-faceted design) would certainly be more challenging to build, but structurally much much more sound.

12'-16' sharks can weigh as much as a car and hit just as hard.  I can't imagine someone purposely building a square cage, out of aluminum tube for a race car and expect it to survive any kind of impact.

Then there was a thick walled "box style" polycarbonate cage with bait inside, used to tease a huge shark.  I mentioned to the wife that if that gets an impact, it will crack or break at any one of the 90 degree joints.  Sure enough, that is exactly where it broke with one good pump from the monster shark.  Nutz!!!

Probably because a box-shaped shark cage is easy to fabricate and compact when broken down.

I'm figuring that is the case as well, but I don't understand why they would compromise structural safety over convenience?

They aren't engineers,  they're thrill seeking marine biologists with a death wish.

Or Hollywood actors posing as biologists. Shark week has really gone down hill over the last few years.
