Finally some sockeye success. I tried Baker lake a few weeks ago and it was dead. Decided to go east and try lake wenatchee last week but was blown off the water.  The winds, smoke, and thunder looked good today, so I headed over at 2:30 this am.  The lake was calm and it was easy to experiment with the new downrigger.  Ended up with three fish and lost several at the boat. The meat was surprisingly red and firm considering how dark the fish were.  There are a lot of fish in the lake but they are starting to turn.  My catch is going to the smoker.

Had to give the lake one more shot.  Fish were holding between 55 and 80 feet. The sockeye are definitely turning but still firm enough and fresh enough for smoking.  I was on the lake at 5:30 and caught two dolly varden ((my first ever and safely released).  Then nothing for 90 minutes. The bite was cray for about 30 minutes, then nothing. It was a beautiful day.  One cool thing about the trip was there were big schools of fry jumping all over the place. I assume they were sockeye?

Nice Job! They are fun to catch and great to eat.
Had great luck at Baker in July & early August but will venture out next time to Wenatchee.

Best of luck
