Hey everyone, just got back from the annual Astoria trip with the power boat.  Great trip, my kids both got their first salmon!  I found myself wondering about going back next weekend, with no kids with the Outback, putting in below Hammond at the beach and fishing the incoming tide.  Anyone tried this or have any suggestions about yakking this area?

Personally, I won't be doing it in a kayak. We went with a guide yesterday and the only kayak I saw all day was in that area in back of your kids in the picture and relatively close to shore. It was mighty choppy and swift out there so get some help from the experts on here who know how to do it safely.

While I can't speak from experience about fishing the Oregon side
I might offer some thoughts on the north edge.

Myself and a couple of friends (who are on here) have made a few trips on the Colombia putting in at Knappton. Its a small rough launch with parking only along Hwy 401 , but small powerboats can use it-- and they do !!!
The area between the launch and Dismal Knitch is full of fish. And very few PB's fish this trough. They all mostly want to cluster closer to the bridge. Get too close to the bridge in a kayak and it can/will get ugly in a hurry. Not a kayak friendly place.
I haven't fished there on weekends but after reading reports on ifish it sounds like the population is pretty high and will continue that way for at least a few more weeks. Most opinion is that " the run" of 2.6 million salmon coming in-river has not really gotten started yet. But people are getting fish and as always some spots and some days are hotter than others.
Another small group of our guys are fishing directly off the coast and having great success. These guys do have the experience and skill to make this work and have been having awesome catches. Read and watch the video in "Salty Goodness" . Cool video.
If you would rather stay on the river Steele--- you can have an Oregon license and still launch on the Wa. side. Or visa-vi. Give it a try.... maybe you'll catch it on a big fish day. Can't do it in front of a computer.

Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

I was at Knappton two weeks ago. There were lots of fish bit no bites. Very kayak freindly place as Mark mentioned. I plan to fish this area regularly and will most likely get there over labor day. I'll let you know how I do. Good luck if you go.

The two kayakers that fished the Washington side by the bridge (amongst the hundreds of powerboats) were successful yesterday.  8) Lots of fish were being caught and the bite really started picking up around 9:30-10:00 am.

The Shipwreck area just upstream from Dismal Nitch is kayak friendly.

I would avoid the Columbia bar if I could. Although it might be calm in there when you leave the launch it can get real nasty fast. In addition to that right now I believe most fish are still staged in the salt water. My recommendation would be to fish Long Beach via a surf launch to avoid the bar and to get to the fish quicker.

Launching from the beach at Hammond and fishing between there and buoy 20 sounds like madness to me.  It certainly wasn't what I was doing the past couple of days.   8)

Hmmm...I sense sarcasm Rawkfish!  Well lots of good suggestions and I want to check out that area from a kayak for sure, and Knapton sounds intriguing as well.  I've decided to get ready for my trip to Yakutat AK next week and stay home for the Labor Day madness!  A friend of mine does very well for silvers down there all through September so I'll definitely be back this season!

It might sound like madness but we caught our limits Saturday and sunday by 9 am. My buddies fished the river and got one fish Saturday and fished until 3pm. I'm not sure what they did Sunday. Additionally, I didn't say anything about buoy 20 or buoy 10 for that matter. I said Long Beach.

I was referring to the original question about Hammond. You're suggestions are spot on though. People have been doing really well off Long Beach and Seaview. I feel like that's where I should have been a couple of times over the weekend.

My misunderstanding then. I was only trying to help people get some fish :-)

Where do you launch from Long Beach? I was on the jetty the other day, it looks like if the surf was right, you could get out. I know some good approaches from razor clam digging? We talking Beard's Hollow?
