I trolled and jigged all day on the 6th got nothing but saw a bunch of people limiting out in less than an hour snagging. 9/7 I succumbed to fish envy and snagged 5  in less than a half hour. I had 1 to go for the limit so I put the kayak in and trolled, jigged, mooched for 4 hours
and nothing. The fish were still being caught from the beach so I snagged my last one. I feel a little ashamed I haven't snagged a fish since  1964 in the moose river when it was still legal.  9/8 I will get my limit and be home before noon. I have gotten over the snagging. There plenty of big bright fish I'm guessing should be ok for another week.

Nah, they are meant to be harvested!  They are tough to get to bite. Heck take a proxy and you can get 24 over the weekend. Just like dipnetting!!!

I arrived there noonish and left right away when I saw hundreds of people snagging with trebble hook.  Amazing how far they could cast with those suckers.  I could've kayak further away from them but it want worth the risk getting hit by one of them.

Yup...BTDT...herring fishing in whittier is a lot like that.  But those are ultra sharp tiny hooks... but they same several oz of lead.

There is always one in the crowd that's the clown that will target practice with you as a target even if you are 100 yards past the school of fish.  lol.

Rod, I saw you fishing down there.

Been lurking a bit deciding if I want to expand my fishing ability into the Kayak realm, seeing you down there and now your trip report made me create an account. We took 18 fish in three hours with several lost, I trolled past you a couple times but in close the action was not there. I suspect the heavy boat traffic and casting from the beach may have had those silvers a little edgy.

Outside of where most of the power boaters were we had two and three fish on at a time trolling real slow about 1.5 mph and around 30-40 feet deep.

Was it you that yelled Cardinal to me? Those were sure some great weather days for Seward. I am going down on Sunday to hang out with my wife who is there for business, I get to sleep in a hotel for the night and then I am going to try to hit Homer and the WG area Monday - Wednesday. I had a power boat for many years and have caught a ton of fish but this kayak fishing is in the top 5 for fishing fun. I haven't tried the Propel in a river(if you don't count Cook Inlet)  yet but have used my paddle kayak and it is equally fun. I just started this year so I am sure there will be many bucket lists cleared in the near future. Kodiak Kings?

Kings in Homer are still offshore. Typical sandlances spawning is sept30/oct 1. Kings will be close soon. Smaller fish are already close. It should be good all through November!!! Season is only half way through!!!!!

I know it's early for the Homer Kings but I rather be fishing than raking leaves and I have a bucket of Gulp Crabs to try. Who knows maybe a tuna or sunfish will bite.

Ha.  My friends were just telling me about tuna and sunfish being caught here...something about their source of food mackerel/jellyfish are feeding in this area.  If warm water fish are moving up north, that means our ocean current is seriously messed up.  On the brighter side, I don't mind catching me some tuna over feeder kings any day.  Spicy tuna roll...yum.

Sunfish (mola mola) could be mistaken for shark with a large dorsal fin, so I hope I don't see them near me.

I was in Cordova last month and one of the locals said they had caught a Great White in a net. In 1984 I saw one in Port Fidalgo and a Blue shark went up on the beach on Montague or Kodiak swimming up a blood trail from some hunters were processing deer on the beach that same year.  ( was in Alaska Magazine and the paper). I think it's a El Nina/o thing. But wouldn't some fresh tuny be great? ah wasabi and ginger .
