Annual fair celebrates fly-fishing traditions

The Seventh Annual Metolius River Fly Fishing and Bamboo Rod Fair will be held July 19 and 20 at the Black Butte School in Camp Sherman, OR. This is a free event to share knowledge of fly tying and fly-fishing on the Metolius River, and is an opportunity to meet some of the West Coast’s finest contemporary bamboo rod makers. I've got a bamboo rod that was given to me as a gift.  Its fun to take it out and cast a bit, very different that the super hi-tech carbon fiber stuff that has become the norm.  I don't use it much because I'm scared I'll break it in a car door or something.

The Met isn't much of a kayak fishing destination (there are some nice lakes nearby), but I recommend anyone who fly fishes (or just likes beautiful rivers) spend some time there being humbled.  Some of the hardest fishing in Oregon, but also one of the most beautiful places in the Northwest to get skunked.  I love the color of the old-growth ponderosa pine bark when the sun hits it in the evening.
