OK so I've been itching to get out on puget sound recently and am wondering is area thirteen had any fish being caught since area eleven is closed til Feb or if I'm better off heading to a lake for trout and trying my luck at bass and perch...

13 is full of flat fish, but there wont be any consistent salmon fishing here until Aug. You're in luck though! This is a pink salmon year! Casting pink jigs on light weight spinning gear, or pink flies on 6wt+ fly rods will produce lots of little chromers for a solid 4-6 weeks!

Our crew of South Sounders will be haunting both Dash and Brown's Point on a regular basis. Feel free to PM me about it anytime, and watch for us to post invites. The more the merrier!

I won't say you cant find them but I have not seen to many kayakers landing salmon in the sound between Jan-March. Last winter we went out and one fellow had luck jigging but consistent success didn't seem achievable. A lot of the kings tend to remain deep (near the bottom). It seems like the two best strategies are to either pull a huge weight on a downrigger in an attempt to get your line down there or jig em up. Frankly speaking, I believe your best bet is to fish rivers for steel or hit the lakes but that's not to say you can't get one!

It looks like there's a boat ramp at Dash Point, but is it a private one or public?  And would the tides at that location get ripping bad enough to kill the fun for us non pedalers?

Jim, I've launched from the parking lot by the pier without difficulties although if their is a north wind it can be quite choppy.

"Dash Point Pier and Park - Tacoma
Website: www.metroparkstacoma.org
Dash Point Park offers splendid views of Puget Sound to the north and northeast toward Seattle. Picnic facilities and 300 feet of beach make the park a pleasant and relaxing place. Launch kayaks and canoes with ease. An “L” shaped pier extending 300 feet out into the sound with 100 feet of pier at the end provides lots of room for fishing and crabbing."
"A venturesome minority will always be eager to get off on their own,
and no obstacle should be placed in their path;
let them take risk, for God sake, let them get lost, sun burnt, stranded, drowned,
eaten by bears, buried alive under avalanches -
that is the right and privilege of any free American."

Dash Point State Park is a great place to launch/fish. You'll need a Discovery pass, or pay $10 a day, and wheels are a must! Nice parking lot, paved path for about half the walk to the water, and bathrooms/outdoor showers for rinsing off.  Fish straight off the point, and to the right of the beach. Incoming tide is best, but there will be fish on both tides. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THE PIER!! The people fishing from the pier will cast buzz bombs at you! It's to the left of the beach though, so as long as you go right you'll catch fish and stay out of trouble. I't s a great place for the family to hang out and play while you fish as well. the tide will push you, but it's no big deal even without pedals. Wind is a far greater nemesis.
