I got my really big salmon net there a few years ago during this deal.

I don't use a net while bottom fishing. easier to use lip grips and pull them into your lap.

+1  It's much easier to not use a net while catching bottom fish. Lip grippers or even a gaff are much better options for this type of fishing.

Or simply grab the jig and lift the fish into the boat. 90% are under 5 pounds and easily handled inside the boat.

I bought a pair of lip grippers, and started making really nice rod leashes for everything. I was thinking for a medium size collapsable net for that one time I might get a bigger fish, or should I just make a gaff?

Nets are a pain in the ass on a kayak! I begrudgingly take one when salmon fish but that is the only time. Lip grips or gaff is all you need.
Don't get too carried away with leashes either. Too many lines on the deck is a tangle waiting to happen.

Different strokes for different folks. I started with a salmon net for lingcod but I pretty quickly went to just lip grips. If you get the plastic type (which I favor), learn to put your hand through the bungee strap when you're using it. If a lingcod goes on a death roll once it's locked in, simply let go. It can roll all it wants and the leash on your wrist will keep it attached to you. The Boca-style grips pivot so this isn't an issue.

I haven't caught a bottom fish yet that didn't come into the boat just fine on a pair of grips, including my wife's 28" 15lb cabezon. I haven't caught any monster lingcod, though. I have a NW-style gaff (I call it a tuna gaff, not sure what it's called) and I've taken it out a few times and used it for practice. For me it's not the right tool for the job. I am building a very short-handled gaff with a 16/0 Mustad hook, however, for helping with lings and cabs.

I have had a situation where I caught a ling that was way to big for the plastic lip grippers. Something about those really long fangs makes you question the sanity of putting your wrist so close. It was to big for my salmon net also. We lost it trying to sandwich it into two salmon nets. I now carry a gaff along with the grippers.

I totally agree with Bill on this . More is not necessarily better. Lip grippers are all you need for bottomfish. A sharp gaff for a 5 lbs fish--- I don't think so....even for something pushing 20 lbs....not.

Not sure what your regs are up there, but us Californians are REQUIRED to have a net with at least an 18" opening on board any time we fish in the salt.

If we want to get on a tangent of jacked up rules. In Washington we are only allowed to use a gaff on halibut and tuna. That means no gaff for lingcod or rockfish .... flat out dumb!

Is that before or after 6 attorney interpretation panel and verified in writing in triplicate by congress? I'd go nuts if I had to fish in Washington. Are the hunting regulations as bad as the fishing?
