Ok I went with the Daiwa Saltiga G Jigging Rod SAG-J66MF   but have yet to find a left hand retrieve Reel.  I am looking at the Penn Squall sql20lw  any one have any input on these?  It is a graphite case instead of metal.  would it stand up?
The Penn Squall would work fine for both.

I use Avet 2spd MXL with 60 or 80lb braid and a Shimano Trevala 6'6"MH for my halibut, but I have caught them on my salmon setup too since we were allowed more than 1 rod for halibut till this year.
My salmon setups are 1970s Abu Garcia 9000 or 10000s auto 2speed reels with Shimano 8'6" Terez XtraFast rod with 40lb braid.  I sometimes use a 7'6" Tiger Ugly stick for salmon with 30lb too.

Should work fine.  Although if you can, I always recommend a lever drag reel on kayaks.  I find that making adjustments with the fish happens a lot more often on my kayaks.

This question had me curious since I figured the requirements for your Halibut set up would depend on where you are fishing.  I think some of the small Halibuts I am catching down here on lighter tackle would be seen by you Alaska guys as just the right size bait for the Big halibut you guys pull in.  :)
I used to think that Bigfoot might exist. Then I saw the reality shows where they are looking for them.  Now I am certain they don't

If you're really set on a combo for both, I'd recommend the following:

Daiwa Saltiga G Jigging Rod SAG-J66MF
Daiwa Saltist Line Counter Reel STTLW30LCHA

The rod has a lot of action at the tip and is fairly sensitive but has enough backbone to pull you out of your yak.
The reel is a purpose built saltwater reel with 15lbs of drag.  The 40 model has 22lbs of drag.

Disclaimer:  I am on the Daiwa Pro-Staff but this combo is friggin awesome.

Ok so I ended up going with this entire set up.  I will just retrieve right handed.    I will Say the Shimano Trevela was a very nice rod and I would have purchased it had I not already made my mind up to go with the Saltiga.  Thank you for The input everyone.

If I'm lucky this will be my first season with a Halibut on my tag. I'm fishing with a Shimano Trevala rod & a Release SG left handed lever 30 lb drag. I'm still breaking this combo in but I felt it handled a 6ft sturgeon yesterday that was a 45 min fight and ran several times with max drag. I Really wanted to get into a Daiwa but I'm a right handed lefty.

WOW! You were able to put 30 pounds of drag against a dino. Thats impressive. How did your kayak feel, stability wise, against a fishing pulling 30 pounds? Have you checked your drag against a scale?

Assuming the butt of your rod was in your lap, you'd have to exert 60 to 90 pounds of force to make 30# of drag slip.  Where's sumpnz?
