I'm going to be going on my first lingcod trip with my kayak in a few weeks and just wanted to know what kind of setups people have been using. I'll be fishing off of San Juan Island probably near Spieden Channel. I'm mostly worried about being able to break loose from snags without flipping my kayak. My thought is to use 60lb braided and run a 30lb leader in between another 60lb leader. This way the leader is protected from the Lings teeth and I can hopefully break the 30lb leader if I get snagged. Let me know what you think, and what you use when fishing for Lingcod in a kayak.

I think that's a pretty good setup, and I do something similar. I use 30lb. mainline (braid), a 20lb. weakest link (mono), and 50lb. mono for the business end.

Make sure you feel comfortable breaking off whatever your weakest link is in the kayak.

I just drop down from heavy bread to 30lb mono.  I haven't had a ling cut my line yet.  Just check for excessive abrasion after each fish.

Personally I run really heavy leaders for lings 100-300 mono. 50 pound braid main.

What advantages do you see with running that heavy? I use 50lb mono leader for all of my bottom fishing and I don't have any issues breaking off a snag. I'm just curious.

Super easy to handle. Thick mono doesn't tangle and makes dealing with big fish really easy.

What B said.  Also, big lings can/will sprint back in the rocks once hooked and when big enough are very hard, if not impossible, to stop. A stout leader will keep you from breaking off in that case. DAMHIK.

Great input guys! I think I'll tie up a few heavy leaders and some lighter ones, and see what works best for me.
