I'm planning on installing a fish finder on my Hobie Revolution 13, and have been looking at the Lowrance Elite 4 Chirp. I have the Hobie install kit for Lawrance ready kayaks. I want to use it to fish the Puget Sound and larger lakes in the area. Has anyone tried this sounder, and are you happy with it?  How's the GPS on this unit?

I have one, and I have been impressed with it as a fish/depth finder. It came with the 83/200 skimmer transducer, which worked well with the Lowrance Scupper mount. But still trying to figure out how to properly wire it all the way from the back of my OK Prowler13. The settings and operation of the sonar is super simple; I had it down pat in first minutes of usage. I had it sitting over 700ft of water; it was pinging and reading depths just fine. It seemed to have picked up fish and possibly even a bait ball well in 10-200+ft of water.  I am not a huge fan of the GPS, but maybe I'm doing it wrong. The GPS feels like it goes from being a very broad far out view and in just two zoom-in clicks its too far in to show any useful details. It does seem accurate on coordinate of locations and displayed SOG. I checked it on both a handheld GPS and phone app I had, and it was fairly consistent with those.

The price is right for what it does IMO.

Thanks for the response AKStumpy! How much time does it take to drain you're battery? Does it show the type of bottom clearly?  I'm hoping to get it soon, so I can catch the end of Lingcod season here in Wa.

Fan,

Your going to like the unit. I've had mine since they came out and I was super impressed on how well it showed fish laying on the bottom. Dive into the manual and really learn all the little tricks so you can have a better experience on and of the water. Also Insight Genesis is something you definitely want to take advantage of, it's a game changer for sure. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

These links are for anyone else looking to pick up a Chirp unit. The rebate gets you $100 off the 5 and $50 off the 4. Good deal.
