I know there is a run of Hooligan in Seward in the early spring so I am wondering if there is any tracking of that small fish. I know that Herring used to be in PWS early in the year also. I am just thinking about a run to the salt closer than Homer in the next couple of weeks. Any thoughts?

I remember as a kid grabbing hooligan by hand out of Seward.  Can't remember where.  Threads point to a hooligan run in late May early June but they are supposedly early this year.  Not sure about this early.

The side by the prison has good structure and I bet it holds bait.  I don't know about winter kings but I bet there are necessary AOTY points lurking there.  They do catch winter kings in Seward, its just very few folks seem to have it dialed in and they aren't talking.

I checked out Seward this weekend with the wife (without Hobies). After the tour of the aquarium there, I am ready for fishing!!  Anyone know of good launch sites from Seward // and possible fishing holes?  I noticed there's a small road that keeps going South...I wanted to explore but the wife was not in agreement :(

oooo....bad call.... Hey I am no family counselor and I have a divorce under my belt but sometimes ya gotta put your foot down. That road leads to Miller's landing and it will be the primary launch location from Seward.  Go down the road, hang a right somewhere.  But if you go straight, you can hang a right there, farthest the road will take you couple hundred years, and you are there.  Zoom in here: https://sites.google.com/site/kayakfishingalaska/locations

Tonsina Creek is 15 minutes away by kayak.  Caines Head an hour or more.  Great Silver fishing and halibut caught off of there as well.  Pinks and Chums can be caught off Tonsina as well. Lots of other critters ranging from flounder, baby ling (can't keep), greenling, rockfish, skates, etc...  Other side I haven't had as much success but I am going to try the sockeyes in late May.  Sonar lights up with them.  Gotta figure out how to catch.

At any rate, you were 10 minutes albeit on a bumpy gravel road perching on a small cliff driving next to the ocean but you could have scoped the launch out!

I'm just giving you grief.  There's no real intel other than just making you want to go out fishing more!  But now you know where one launch is!!

You can hike out to Caines Head, but you can only get out the whole way when there is a big minus tide.  Some cabins you can rent out there as well.  But why walk when you could peddle/paddle?
No matter how many times the PB's tell me I'm nuts....I still smile every time I out fish them

Hey guys,

I just arrived in Seward about a week ago and I am working on a charter boat here.

The reds have either arrived at the mouth of the river or they will any day now.

I have been given some good intel on places to kayak fish near Seward that might hold some nice halibut.

I am working tomorrow but have the day off Tuesday, probably Wednesday, and again Thursday. If anyone wants to come launch out of Seward to try for some reds or halibut, let me know!

Tyler

Thanks Tyler!!! Great report!  Seward is notoriously difficult to catch halibut.  But they are there.  So good intel will go a long ways.

Let us know how ya do!
