Ok. Over the years I have been pestered in a  good way by Fish and game folks to try and go fish the Whittier terminal Kings.

They have been penning them from 2010 to 2013 out by salmon run.  Thats a maybe a half mile out from Smitty's cove.  I see in 2014 that they moved the penning lcoation to the Harbor.  Because they moved the acclimation pen from Smitty's Cove to Salmon Run, nobody seems to be catching them.  But with a kayak, it would be super easy access and it could be hundreds of kings are just milling around in that area.

Because the shorecasters always concentrate by the harbor and boat fisherman do everything they can to get as far away from Whittier (Wettier, Shittier..etc) I think they just by pass it.

I don't fish it because I absolutely HATE Whittier.   Over priced, no service, no fish...usually.  Also my parents refuse eat terminal hatchery kings.  I'm no that picky, but there is no way I would choose one of these fish over the feeders we have been catching.  But with the runs showing promise around the state, there could be a decent return.  They have been stocking them at a pace of about 100,000 per year meaning we should get a couple of thosand back if the ocean conditions are good.

Depending on the weather, I may try it with my kid soon.

Let me know when you go.  I've been dying to try my luck in Whittier king.  Plus there is this shrimp rig I wanted try within the harbor.  The deepest is about 180' and I'm not expecting much to catch anything...but you never know until you try it, right?

So Rudy after reading your post are you suggesting salmon run cove as a possible target or smiths cove ?

Fairly close to each other but I'd fish the opening of Salmon Run cove or whatever they call that first stream after town.

Alright we fished smitty's cove and then salmon run a painted some fished but hooked nothing.  I am not convinced that the fish are non-existent.  One, I had trouble with the wind and water.  It laid down but not until I gave up on it.

Things I learned:

Put in at smittys cove not the beach by the ferry terminal.  Had I know I could put in there I could have stayed on the water longer and then ducked out.

Dry suits are tough when it's like 75 degrees out and you are fighting the wind!

I am not giving up on the king I am scouting Seldovia slough and east side of the homer spit. Anyone know if they are still coming into the lagoon?  I am headed back out wed night.
