Fishing the gulch this weekend was a little tough. Saturday I caught Irish lords like crazy, which can be annoying and hard on bait. So Sunday I tried a few different things trying to avoid this. First I picked up my trolling speed slightly which helped some. Also raised my bait up a little further off the bottom. It helped some, so may be something to try.

Hooking an Irish Lord is a sure sign you bait is either static on the ground or you are drifting with the current.  They are very weak swimmers and will typically not chase doawn bait.

Having said that, I don't mind them.  When I am not catching halibut, I am not catching Irish Lords either for the most part.  Yah it happens when all I catch is Irish Lords, but when the ocean seems dead for halibut, they aren't there either.  Must be a bait thing.  But when the halibut bite is on, typically so are the Irish Lords.  Not always true, but enough that I don't curse at them any more...most of the time.
