Nice DIY hawg trough.. what's it made of?

I actually ordered a Hawg Trough and then looked at the scrap from my rod shipping/bait tube and started thinking.
(dangerous stuff)

My rod shipping/bait tube is 4" hdpe sewer pipe (same stuff the boat is made of.)

I cut a strip out of the pipe about 3 1/2" wide. Then flexed it back and forth over backwards to flatten it out. Warming it by placing it in a  black garbage bag in the sun makes its much more malleable. I'd cut it wider if I did it again.

Bend the last 4" or so forward flat against what used to be the inside of the pipe.

Spray contact cement on a cheap dress makers tape measure and stick it on after it dries a
bit.   Voilą!

It stores folded flat held with a velcro strap. This one is nice because its indestructible and breakage was a complaint in the reviews of the Hawg Trough.

Awesome!  I'd been thinking about how to make one of these for a while but the ideas kept getting overly complex (and expensive).  Nice way to keep it simple!

BTW:  I noticed it's only 30" long.....  I'm just saying....   ;)

Nice job FFTW.

I really like this low cost solution but one thing I learned in Search & Rescue is every piece of gear adds up and weight slows you down.  I'm going to make one of these for my drift boat though.

The measuring device on my yak is Sharpie brand with a mark every inch on the right side.  It fades each year and I pull out the Sharpie again.

Some of you folks have some very nicely outfitted yaks that could probably be considered yachts!  I'd hate to see what happens following a poor approach to a beach landing.  I'm going to add a fish finder for mine but I think that's about all the technology I need.  Certainly no boom box!

Thanks again FFTW.  I've already started cutting mine.

I do the same thing FS (marked the boat). I also make wraps on my rods at the legal minimums. That works great with out adding another piece of gear.

But with all this competitive fishing (AOTY here and 321fish there) I wanted a ruler with a reference scale and something to cradle the fish.

But you know, competitive fishing should be banned. Heck, we should be competing with ourselves and nature and just enjoy the communion.  You guys should all just stop and say "no more!!!!"

and I'll take the pot :toothy12:

1st off, you've got to join to take the pot.   ;D

2nd off, aren't you the guys who just scored an all expenses paid trip to fish the QCI's?   >:(

Ghetto trough!!!
Great idea FFTW.
I'm gonna go dig around my scrap pile of pipe and see what I have at home to use for that wonderfully simple design
