So I was contacted by researchers that do tagging studies for juvenile black cod.  They concentrate in SE Alaska near Sitka but they are looking for locations in PWS and South central Alaska where they have a chance at consistently tagging the juvenile black cod.

If you run into any, and would like to help out, please post the location,  Date, water & fish depth, size, pictures if you have them and what you caught them on.

I think its always a good idea to try and get as much information as possible.

Just to be clear you're talking about sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria) and not black rockfish (Sebastes melanops).  Both are called black cod.

Have I ever mentioned that I really dislike fish common / market names?

Lol. Yes. Sablefish. We call the black rockfish up here an equally incorrect name. Everyone here says black bass. Never heard black cod for the rockfish. Learn something new every day.

Let's not even start with the commercial/retail misnaming of fish. I agree with your assessment of incorrect labeling.

Actually, I've heard black rockfish get called the following:  black rockfish, black rock cod, black cod, gray rockfish, johnny bass, black bass, and black snapper.  Of course, the fillets are also sometimes mislabeled as red snapper in the markets.

In Maryland and Virginia.. "rockfish"  refers to striped bass.

Attention biologists:   Juvy Sablefish catch

Date June 27th.  Location:  Between Lowell Pt. and Derby Cove, specifically off Tonsina Creek and Just south and north of same, most commonly at depths between 120 and 175'.  But also one or two around 60 to 75' deep over 150 total depth.

Qty caught on herring (whole, 3" size) about 10, only a couple retained.
