Hi! I'm Rachel. After getting into kayaking and fishing here in Alaska lat year, I decided to combine the two this year and made a bit of an upgrade to the Costco special: a Future Beach Angler 160. Had it out a few times and floated (without my gear) from Skilak to the Kenai Keys in it last week to see how it handled. I was pleased, super stable and not bad getting her across Skilak! Have yet to get a dry suit or try her out on the ocean, however, and I'm chomping at the bit too do so. Maybe I can meet up with some of you all next week.

Anyway, I am leaving state for the winter mid-September and I'll be following the coast all the way down to Cabo and hopefully fishing the whole way. Goal is to be a proficient Pacific Coast kayak angler by the time I get back to AK next year. That is...if I don't die first! This solo undertaking is scary and exciting all at once. I can't wait! I do hope to catch a halibut before I leave, just to start the trip off right!

 Welcome to the madness Rachel.....

Sounds like quite the adventure ahead of you. Have a great time and learn all you can. Should be an awesome quest.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Hi Rachel,

First of all, welcome to NWKA!

Please, please tell me you are driving along the coast and kayak fishing along the way.  I'm not sure a Costco sit on top special is a safe choice for a solo paddle from Alaska to Baja.

Normally, I wouldn't be so concerned.. but you didn't mention driving and you did say

Now the road trip idea (i.e. bringing your kayak down using your car or truck), well that sounds like a grand adventure.  I once did a similar trip with friends and we covered the entire length of Baja and it was fantastic.

Hey hey!  Glad you found the site.   For Northern California, the sister site is http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?action=forum  Great group there too.

The Alaska group is currently mainly fishing out of Seward for cohos.  I'm considering a trip down to Whiskey Gulch to try halibut and kings.  Not quite sure yet. You can fin d out people's plan in the Alaska Section.

Sounds like a pretty awesome adventure you have planned!!!!!
