Just got done fishing by the wreck. One fish on but couldn't land it. I have been having trouble with my depth finder so on the way in when I was next to the pylons, my finder says 5 feet. I wanted to verify so I put my paddle in and touched bottom. Somehow, I knocked my extra rod in. I saw it sinking and since I was only in five feet of water, I jumped in. The kayak leaned to the side and my other rod also went in the water. Crap.

I tried to go under to look but my dry suit had air and I couldnt go underwater far enough to look. I checked my general location and then went to shore and unloaded my gear and put on my wetsuit. I went back out and started a grid search. I tried swimming underwater near the bottom and walking and feeling with my feet. After 30 minutes i was about to give up when I felt something. Yessssss. After another five minutes I had the other as well and I was laughing like a madman.

I debated even posting this but I thought the mental image of it all might be kind of funny. I sure felt stupid but I did learn a few things.

Bummer. I am finding kayaking saves gas money but there is defiantly a higher potential for losing things.

When it comes to loosing gear from a kayak there are two types of kayak fishermen. Those that have lost gear and those that will loose gear. Nobody is immune. Great news that you were successful in the search and recovery.

Yes, this is true.  However, if you love it - leash it or at least make it float.

You don't have have the leash attached while using the rod, but at least leash it while not in use.  This goes for everything else no currently in use, but stowed somewhere on the boat.

Take the time to think things through BEFORE hitting the water.  Play it out in your mind a few times, and ask yourself if how you have something stowed if it will be there if you tip, or bump or snag it.  If your answer is that it will go swimming, fix it before hand.

That was one of the reasons it was so frustrating.  This was the first time I have gone without leasing the rods and this happens. Ha
