I have heard that a computer game company is developing a virtual reality kayak fishing computer game.  You start the game with a certain amount of "money," and use that "money" to buy a "kayak" and "fishing gear."  There are many different kinds of "kayaks" available in the game with different performance characteristics.  There are also many different "rods," "reels," "lures," "bait," and other equipment which you can purchase as part of the game.  Initially, the objective is to learn where and how to catch various species of "fish." To do this you "paddle" or "pedal" your virtual "kayak" out into the ocean, deploy your "fishing gear," and try to catch "fish," using various fishing techniques.  You maneuver your "kayak" over a virtual "bathymetric map" with many interesting underwater features, and move through spectacular virtual "scenery" and "shorelines."  You receive points for catching "fish," based on the size and species you catch.  But in order to obtain more money, you need to get good enough at "fishing" to enter into virtual "fishing tournaments" where you compete against other "fishermen" who are participating in the game for "cash awards."  You can use those "cash awards" to buy more and better "fishing gear."  The ultimate objective in the game is to win the "Angler of the Year" award, competing against other virtual fishermen.

The game has hazards, including "weather," "tides," "sharks," and "seals."  If you ignore an unfavorable weather prediction and go "kayaking" in bad "weather," you may get tipped over and lose expensive "gear," which you will have to spend your limited "cash" resources to replace, and you may even get "killed" and have to start again.

This game would be exciting and fun enough if it were a standard point of view computer game with high quality graphics, but this game is being developed as a "virtual reality" game. Kayak fishing in the game will be way better and more exciting than actual kayak fishing.  Once this game comes out, people who used to actually go fishing will quit and just play the game, which is more satisfying and rewarding than actually fishing.  Another advantage of playing the game rather than actually fishing is that you'll save a lot of money in gas costs, since you play the game at home on your sofa.

The market for computer games is enormously bigger than the market for kayaking and fishing equipment.  Because the game will be so much more fun than actually fishing, I predict that many kayaking and fishing gear manufacturers will go out of business.

So watch for the release of this exciting virtual reality kayak fishing computer game!

I have mixed feelings about this & find myself laughing at first but then following it up by cringing and shaking my head in disgust. No doubt some will prefer this game over the realities of the kayak fishing life; and this is where they shall reside. Saving money in gas will buy them the more expensive maladies of a sedentary lifestyle.

Agreed.  Any discussion of "fishing" using that many quotation marks is not for me.  At least while I'm physically able.

You start the game with a certain amount of "money," and use that "money" to buy a "kayak" and "fishing gear."
The "reality" is that there's also a sport called "kayak fishing" that you start with a certain amount of money, buy a kayak, fishing gear and it all sits in a garage because we're all too busy on our computers to get out and fish. :)

On the other hand, it might entice some kids who play the game into getting off the sofa and into a real kayak, too.  Pros and cons, just like everything else...

Before kayak fishing I was always playing the new Call of Duty on my Xbox during the winter months. My Xbox is a Netflix and Hulu player now, I barely even use it.

I can see the appeal to a game like this but I'm not interested. Let them have their game. They can pwn noobs online and talk shit to people they don't know from all over the world. I'll be slaying fish in real life, earning real XP.

If you have been Googling "kayak fishing virtual reality computer game," hoping to be able to buy it, I have bad news for you: I made up all that stuff about the computer game.  As far as I know, there is no such game in existence or in development.

Which is fine with me.  I'm not interested in computer games.  I'd rather be outdoors doing something real.  Like catching real fish out of a real kayak.
