Just a heads up in case anybody was looking to pick up one of these.  Was just out putzing around with the Revo, trying to get something in place to hold a setup for surf launches as I don't like just using rod holders and the front hatch is fairly hard to utilize for a one piece rod.  The rubber strap broke on me when I was mock fitting it to the boat to see if it'd fit over the rod butt of my halibut rod. Glad I hadn't drilled any holes yet, and even happier that it didn't break while on the water as if it broke with the minimal amount of pressure I put on it I could easily see a wave hitting it and causing the same, potentially losing a setup (assuming no leash...).  Sucks I threw away the receipt though!

Anyways, maybe they just had a bad batch of rubber, maybe it'd been sitting on the shelf at Next Adventure too long and dried out, or maybe it just wasn't built to take much of a stretch, but a heads up for anyone else looking to purchase one.

Sorry to hear about this! No worries on the receipt, I will talk to Hobie on Monday and get you a replacement part.

Cool, appreciate it Jake.  Ever see this happen before or not enough of those rod holders out there to get much experience/feedback?

It was likely just a randon one-off issue and not indicative of anything else, wanted to post so others were aware and use a secondary retaining device of some sort juuuust in case (I've had issues w/ that same style of rubber on the old Thule surf straps as well)

Just check them before you install them.  I put one on each side of my Revo and have had them stretched pretty far several times and they haven't broke.  That one may have just had a crack in it as a default or something.  This isn't something many users have been complaining about, at least not that I've seen on the Hobie forum.

I installed one on my yak about a month ago, went to riffe lake last week and went to use it and the dang thing broke. Hardly any tension on it at all. I really liked the idea of rod holder but now i regret drilling the holes

Hmmm...I haven't installed mine yet.  Maybe I will test it out today.  I was planning on using the paddle bungie and paddler holder to hold the rod on as a back-up anyways.  On my Outback I just run the rod tip under the rear tank well bungies and use the paddle holder and bungie to secure the rod.  It works great for shorter rods like the 7 foot Ugly Stik Tiger lite.  I bought the Hobie rod holder mount in question for my longer one piece rods.

Not sure if it would work on the Revo, but I stick my rod tips through the bow hatch bungees on my adventure, and use the paddle bungees to hold the rod to the kayak sides.  Really works well.  I take the reels off in bad surf as they really sits flat against the kayak that way.

Stripped down and ready for a surf landing.

On a Hobie, try using the paddle holder bungie to hold the butt of your rod instead of the Hobie rod holder.  I have a 13' Revolution and use 6.5' rods, and the paddle holder works perfectly.  I've never mounted the holder for the butt of the rod on my kayak.  Depending on the length of your kayak, the length of your rod, and where you mounted the tip protector on the bow of your kayak, your reel might end up in front of the paddle holder bungie, in the middle of the paddle holder bungie, or behind the paddle holder bungie.

Mine has broken also...after only 3 uses.

Dave

Yeah, I had one break on me.  I added some simple bungee straps near the seat area and they work just as well.

Then how do you hold your paddle in place?

When I'm going through the surf I always have my paddle in my hands so it works out nicely.

Hobie kayaks have a paddle holder on each side of the kayak, so I use the paddle holder on one side for my rod, and the paddle holder on the other side for my paddle.
