Remodel season is done!  Time to hit the water.  I will mostly be targeting Kokanee this year with an occasional trip to the sound for Salmon later in the Summer.  But this Sunday I am going to go out to Mason Lake and see if I can find the Kokanee.

Never fished it before but it is close and open year round.

Anyone is welcome to join and if you see me out there be sure and say hi!

Well a little bit of a report.

The good.

I was virtually alone on the lake today.  There were a couple of ski boats that came out and did some laps as if going around the lake full throttle with blaring music was somehow thrilling to the occupants but what ever, they were respectful of distances and were only there for a little while.  Other than that and a sea plane, not much else happing on the lake.  The launch is at the North end of the lake and the lake runs North/South.  So I fished as far South as was reasonable for the time frame I had.  I knew that in the evening a South wind was going to come up, because it does often.  So it would be a nice sail home.  It really blew in hard, which made for a fun and easy trip home surfing the whitecaps.  The only paddling I had to do was to keep going in the right direction.

That Bad.

I have seldom seen a more naked lake.  Maybe I was just in the wrong area, but I covered a lot of water (almost 7 miles when the day was done) and most often the fish finder was completely blank.  Now it could be that the fish are closer to the surface scattering when I go by and so the fish finder does not see them.  But in most lakes you see the occasional fish at the mid depths.  Nada.   I found the Kokanee I was looking for but they were schools of small fish holding at 62feet of water in 82 feet.  I went down after them and picked up two fish , both about 4-5 inches long.   I also had a second rod on the surface (about 10-15 feet).  Often when Kokanee fishing early season trout will hit the surface rod.  No love yesterday.

The paddle is really too long to get into fish to make this lake work very well and I know it will be a zoo later in the year.  But I pass this on for someone else that might investigate it.

I like the waypoint map, how were you tracking it?

I wasn't.  I wanted to know how far I went so I went on Google maps and measured the distance. That is the path that I took and how far up the shoreline I made it.  I got some bites and headed back the other way and then finally got blown off.

Ahhh I got ya. I've been looking for an app that does that automatically but I think it would kill my phone battery.
