This Thursday the 15th my girlfriend and I will be launching around 8 from either] south cove or sunset bay. The weather looks great!

If anyone wants to join,  that would be awesome.

I think we'll look at south cove first abd decide if we want to do the hike. With two of us and wheels I figure it might not be that bad. If it looks bad,  we will just go to sunset.

Any tips for launching/fishing those spots?

Tyler,

South cove is a pretty gnarly trail down to the water. If you have a small light kayak with minimal gear it is doable, but don't expect you can load up a full size yak with a crate full of normal gear and get down and especially not up. Launching out of Sunset is just too easy and its not that far of a paddle/pedal to fishing grounds- even to Simpson or South Cove.

Low tide is at 8. First light is at 7. If it were me I would want to be out there at 7 to catch the low slack and fish through the high at 2 if I could make it that long.
I' now looking at how I can get out of work to join you! Friday is looking even better!

Just found out that Friday will actually be the day. My boss changed my day off from Thursday to Friday so we'll be there then!

+1 on what Erik said about South Cove. You would need to carry the kayaks down the bottom portion of the trail. The paved path ends just at the bottom of the trail and turns into a narrow dirt trail, followed by a lot of driftwood and other debris. It would be a brutal hike back up the trail, Sunset Bay would be an easier option.

Having said that, I have always wanted to launch my kayak out of S. Cove, just so I could say that I did it.  ;D

I'm thinking about joining you on Friday before work. I haven't caught a big Ling or a Cabby this year.

Now my boss said I might not have Friday off (!!!???), so I will have to wait and see.

I haven't been fishing in two weeks, so I am definitely eager to get out there.

If I can make it, I will be at sunset bay ready to launch around 8 or 9am Friday.

This will be a good chance to look at the south cove trail in case there is ever a north wind/swell and I really want to get out.

Hope to see you guys out there!

I surf the Cape-(aka south cove) not bad going down paved almost all the way down but the last fifty yards is a bear between the drift wood and logs that are wash up and the bowling ball size rocks and the seaweed slim. Coming back up is another matter, after 2-3 hrs. of surfing making your way up through the rocks seaweed slim and logs and then the climb back up. Bad enough with a longboard let a lone a kayak fully loaded. It doesn't look bad looking down but looking up it nasty(it's a little over 2000 ft. drop). Just thought you like to know.

Climbing 2000 feet with a loaded kayak would definitely be nasty.

I have an old Sit in Kayak that i have taken down the trail a few times. Its not too heavy, so I carry it on my shoulder and have all my gear in a big backpack. On the way up, I make 2 trips. One with just the kayak and one with everything else. Every time i do it, I tell myself i'm never doing it again. I wouldnt attempt it with my hobie or a heavier kayak unless i had another person to help carry it up. The fishing has always been good though, and sometimes it seems like the best option when the north wind is blowing.

Fishing was HOT Friday and the conditions were some of the best I've been out in! I lost count how many marginal sized Lingcod and Cabazon I caught and released. Lancers were producing well as usual. I fished all day until my arms got so tired pulling in fish I couldn't the hold the pole anymore. :D

Great to see you and your girlfriend out there Tyler! Get any pictures of the big ling she caught?

Unfortunately both of our phones died, so we didn't get any pictures : /

In total we kept three lings and one nice black. The action was definitely steady for the blacks all morning until we left around noon.

It was fun fishing with Erik! I just wish we got some good pictures. Next time!
