I lost my VHF last May during steelhead season (jumped out to get a boat off a sandbar, boat came unstuck, put me in the water, HX751 never seen again). I've been trying to decide what to get ever since, looking for a good deal. I loved the HX751, but its discontinued, and the 851 is a real jump in price, plus battery performance sounds like it took a hit. I used the HX290's last year a bunch, and though they don't have a lot of bells and whistles, they are really solid performers. Last night I found a good price on them, $104.95, and Standard Horizons is running a $20 main-in rebate on several models, including the 290. Too good to pass up at that price. Figured I would pass it along in case anyone is in the market for a radio to be legal for the Derby in a couple weeks. Wish I could make it down, but doesn't look like its going to happen.

I found the best price at a Store that sells GPS (not sure about giving direct mention to non-sponsors). The googlemonster should be able to find it for you. Oh, and ground shipping is free, even up here to AK!
