Hey fellas, I'm headed down to Coos bay for a couple days arriving monday and leaving Thursday.  I was hoping to get out of Sunset Bay for some lings but not sure if the surf will be too big. Is there anything else in the area I can successfully target. Anybody down there interested in doing some fishing any of those days? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Do any herring come into Coos Bay area?  Sounds like they are starting to show further south.  I've been keeping an eye on herring this year, want to get some for pickling.

I've not chased herring in Coos Bay, but according to this article, they should be there.

Aaron, keep a watch on this:

We've not yet seen a break in the swells further south of Coos Bay and I wouldn't expect it to be more calm up there - or at Sunset - but I haven't eyeballed Sunset so it's just a guess.  If I head towards Coos Bay this week, I'll detour past the beach and let you know what I'm seeing.

The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.

A lot of herring come in to the Coos Bay area, bb2fish.

A couple of boats just started working herring down south, here.  Don't know how they're doing, but will ask and let you know.  If you promise to share your pickling recipe...

Starting out at 7 ft. on Monday and building up to 14.5 ft. by Thurs. If you like to surf, Sunset will be the place 14ft. with a south west swell.

Yeah, that's what I see, too.  Northwest swell and southwest winds.  Surfable.

I went netting in Crescent City on Saturday and got

20 green/red label
293 blue label
453 purple label
43 black label

809 total.

That would be way over limit in Oregon but in California its kosher.  If you want to make bait or get pickling herring get on Crescent City ASAP, run will probably wind down this week.

Sure. The net in the pic is a 10' net and isn't mine. Mine is a 5' net. I can't throw that 10 footer, I'm just not that skilled.

I'm in eureka til Thursday and will be in Ashland on Friday. I'll drive through crescent city.

You might have some luck just showing up at the dock with your rod and sabikis and chatting up the guys with giant nets. On Saturday they gifted me 2.5 buckets full. My 809 is what I vacuum sealed and put in the freezer. I've given away about the same amount to others since 800 is more than I need already, it will last 3 of us a full season with some room to spare.

Sure.
Crash, you're quite the guy - Thanks!  I seriously wish I could get down there this week to load up on the critters, but alas, I will wait until the herring come to me. (further north in Oregon).  But that is still just a sick volume of herring, and a nice distribution of sizes.  Good for you to share.  Do you do any pickling, or will they all be bait?

No pickling this year. I have 20 jars of herring I canned last year still on the shelf. The pickled herring goes fast but I just wasn't feeling putting in the work this year. I'll probably pickle next year.
