Boxofrain,
I've talked to half a dozen people who say they kayak fish around this area, but its rare to see anyone. I'm really new at it myself.
Went out at Lone Ranch a couple months ago with another kayaker and got skunked. Even with no fish it was a great trip. We paddled out to twin rocks and it was cool watching the power of the swells surge against the rocks. Between the current going one direction and the wind blowing the opposite I couldn't get my jigs to the bottom. The water was a little rough and my buddy got seasick.
The amazing thing is that with rough water, too much wind and current, and no fish, it was still a great day on the water.
Went out at Harris Beach by myself one evening last month. Caught three blacks and one undersize lingcod. The water was nice and calm so I didn't mind going out alone. Didn't have to go out very far at Harris Beach either. If you stand in the parking lot you can see the kelp beds starting about a hundred yards out to the south.
I'll give you a call next time I get a chance to go fishing. You can get ahold of me at 661-3845. My work schedule sounds a lot like yours. I might be working any day of the week, but I can sometimes bend my schedule to include a few hours off.

Hello, All.  I'm in far northern California near Eureka.  I've fished out of Crescent City a few times and would love to hit Oregon some time.  I hang out at the NCKA site quite a bit, but most of those members are in the SF bay area, so I'm kinda in between your base and theirs.  Anyway, I love being on the ocean in my yak, and I've done a fair amount of flat-water river scouting too.

Would love to try to hook up some time and I'm looking forward to cruising this site now that I know of it.

ABKING,
Welcome to the site!! Seen many posts by you on NCKA. I am not very ocean savvy but enjoy paddling any chance I can get. Fishing is just another excuse to paddle.
If you plan to head up this way let me know and I'll show you some good launch and fishing areas. Right now the salmon are stacking up in the lower holes of the Chetco, waiting for enuogh rain to move on up. Some nice fish being "taken", however these are mostly snagged when bumping the way too many lines in the water. Not much for biting at this point.
I acquired an ab permit last year (no fee in Or.) but have not used it as of yet. The State requires the permit to be filled out much like a salmon tag, and returned to the State for survey records.

Hey Abking welcome, nice to have you here. I am a transplant from NorCal, although I have lived all over. I used to live west of Garberville past Redway over the king range in Shelter Cove. Have you ever been there? Lots of salmon being taken from over the years. Good place to dive for Ab's. Although I have not dove in the last 15 year, I used to dive with my brothers from Bodega up to shelter cove. Glad to have you join the group.

Thx for the welcome, boxofrain and floatin cowboys.

box- I'd love to hookup sometime, and I've always been curious about the ab diving up there.

cowboys - I love the Cove and go there as much as I can.  I caught a 38# salmon there from my yak last month, and I've pulled some 10's at abalone point - it's where I learned to dive back in '88 or so.  Small world, eh?!   :)
See you at Gimme Shelter

Oh Abking, how sweet that is on the salmon. When I first moved out there I tried surf fishing of the black sand (youve been there so you know about the drop) the current right off the beach is so strong it's crazy. But I caught the ugliest fish ever which was a wolf eel, a tooth critter. I lived up above the black sand beach at kaluna cliffs, it was a equastrian camp ground. I lived there with my wife and worked at Benbow Inn in Garberville. I loved living, and working there. The salmon we would pull out of there had flesh that was just blood red and firm as can be. The best salmon I have had anywhere bar none. I understand land is still cheap there as Cali goes. You should snap up a small piece and set up a fish camp and I will down to help you fish, and set up camp.

I would love so much to snap up a spot at the Cove and start making it homey, but my wife doesn't share the sentiment...   ::)  Til that changes I do the drive down from Loleta in 1.5 hours and try to hit it whenever I can.  I know Kaluna Cliffs as I used to backpack the Lost Coast in college and afterward - some great times up at Shipman and Gitchell Creeks.   :)  The Cove is such a great spot to yak - easy launch, fish nearby, sheltered from the north wind and swell - and the salmon, oh the salmon!  I caught a 21.5 and a 10.5#er one day in July '05, but catching that 38 was the highlight of my fishing life - what a rush!   ;D  I go solo alot, but am always looking for company.  If you find yourself planning a trip get in touch.
See you at Gimme Shelter

Howdy....I'm from Wyoming and kayak on the rivers and mountian lakes of Rocky mountians. The winters are spent at Port Aransas Tx. and we will be fishing there this year. Some friends and I are planning a trip to Deception pass state park at the end of June, we will be bringing our sot's and fishing gear, any advice would be a great help as we are new to the area.

Welcome Two Bears!

I hate to say it, but late June is not a good time to fish out of Deception, at least not in the salt water.  Lingcod traditionally closes June 15, and salmon doesn't open until later in the summer (and even then it's a release fishery for Chinooks).  It's a beautiful place to kayak though, especially if you want to play in the currents that get ripping in the pass itself.

If you be flyfishers, you might be interested in Pass Lake, which is on the N side of the D. Pass. It was one of the first lakes in the state to go to selective regs., and has some decent sized browns and rainbows. For flies, go to the Ace Hardware in Oak Harbor and pick up some "ice cream cone" chronomids. Cranberry Lake, which is in the park on the S side, is state wide regs (I think, but check)and has bass, panfish and put-and-take trout.
