We can do this as everyone's favorite math problem, the story turned into an equation.

Johnny wants to go fishing tomorrow, Johnny looks at the tide table for, say, St Johns, Willamette river.
Low tide is at 8:19 with a ht of 3.4 ft  --- definitely planning on fishing the incoming early am
High tide is at 11:51 with a ht of 7.9
at 7 pm (latest I would be fishing) the ht is 2.2

For those with experience on the Willamette or Multi channel, or even the C, is a tidal drop of 5.7 ft over roughly 7 hours going to affect the outgoing flow enough to make it tough to pedal upstream. Trying to learn how to judge river flow with a tidal drop is a kind of new to me.

Thanks for any insight.

Depends on the river and where you're fishing on that river. For the Columbia, that outgoing current will probably be moving pretty well so you'll have to plan on fishing somewhere where the water is slower, like along the shoreline in-between wingdams. For the Willamette and the MC, the current won't be as bad and you shouldn't have too much trouble moving upriver during the outgoing tide. For sure, you may be moving slower than you might like, but it shouldn't be bad.

Was planning on fishing downriver of St Johns bridge, mostly in and around the mouth of the Multi channel, seems to be about the right depth. Wasn't sure how the flow gets affected going thru there.

Thanks for the info.

I wish I had good info for you on that spot but I've never fished it.  I know it's popular though.  Watch other boats and try to do what they're doing.  Look at some river charts of the bottom there and find where the shelves are.  If you put some time in there I'm sure it'll pay off for you.  Let us know how it goes!

That spot is combat fishing at its best. I, personally, wouldn't want to fish there in a kayak. I get nervous in my aluminium PB with people generally trolling one way and then there is the one or two guys going against the flow, someone gets snagged and someone hooks up, and it can get messy fishing with a couple hundred of your closest friends ;)

With that said, I've fished it a few times, didnt pay attention to the tides, but didnt notice the current being considerably  stronger than elsewhere.
