Hi Guys! I still looking for new places for kayak fishing and I think about going to Deception Pass this weekend. I have never been to this place and I would appreciate any tips/advices on. What is the best spot to launch, what kind of fish to target? Any information will be helpful. Thank you in advance and tight lines!  :)

i don't really have much to offer other than
1. be careful, as deception pass is home to the swiftest current in puget sound, and some crazy whirlpools, back eddies, etc..., and
2. bowman bay, right next door, is always mellow, unless you peak your head around the corner when the current's ripping.

DWB123 - thank you! What kind of fish can be caught in this Bowman bay? Salmon or any bottom fish?

Folks have been fishing whole herring under a float from south of West Beach to the boat ramp at Cornet Bay. I fished with this method from my yak yesterday just south of West beach and landed one small Coho. I missed four as these puppies are somewhat difficult to hook.... Really didn't need the yak as these fish are feeding about 20 feet off the beach  :)  But it's more fun from the kayak. I just anchored in close, cast towards the shore and let the current do the rest...

Hope this helps

in the bay itself you'd be pretty dang lucky to catch a salmon - they're generally going to be outside. there are some bottomfish (though not many) to be caught in the bay itself, but nearly everything's closed right now.

Hi Guys! I think it is better to post to my old topic than starting a new one. I am still thinking about Deception Pass. But what stopping me from going to there it is kinda unclearness on what to catch there. The all interesting species are closed forever or not a season now. And looks like only bottom fish and forage fish. What do you think? What kind of fish possible to catch there this time of year?

Every time I look into Deception Pass the tides are screaming.  Beware.

Actually, the current outside deception pass is not bad. At least not bad in my Hobie Revo. Launch from Bowman bay and stay to the north. You can fish the drop off just off the wall extending north from Rosario Beach. Beware the border between MAs 6 and 7 (San Juans) which have different rules and extends SW from a point on the cliffs on the north side of Rosario Beach. Once around the corner and fishing the north wall you are in MA 7.

Even a trip out to Deception Island is not tough. Stay to the north side and watch out for high speed boats heading in and out of the Pass. I've fished all around Deception Island regardless of the tide.

Thank you!  I'll need to work on plans now I have the Outback.  A couple of drive by trips in the area last summer completely missed Bowman.   And thanks for the pointers on MA 6 and MA 7.   I see a July-Sep closure in MA 7 on that side of the line.  Need to read all the fine print...

When you fish the area are you usually after bottom fish or salmon?
