I think we're going to hit Tillamook Bay Saturday morning  ;D you didn't specify an exact distance from Alaska now did ya. But seriously I want to come up there and spend a week or two taking in the beautiful scenery as well as catch some new to me species. What's the best time of year and more importantly what's it cost to stay a week there for two adults and one grand kid( wife won't be away from him that long)   ;)

Yah baby!  C'mon up!

So...When should you come up?  That's a load question.  But here's my take on things.

Now through mid June: Great time.  Kings and halibut.  Should have good success on both.  Could bee some freshwater lake opportunities but nothing impressive by my standards.

June through July:  Bad news is it is crowded!!!! (but not out of a kayak!!!) But crowds mean premium prices.  Obviously there is a reason people come during those month.  Traditional the hot time for king, sockeyes and Halibut.

August and September:  Cohos, Trout, Char, and halibut.  Crowds thin out pretty good.  So prices also come down.  But still not off season.

October: Feeder kings and maybe halibut.  probably some great freshwater opportunities for world class trout and char plus silvers.  This would be off season.

So my choices:

1) Mid may.  Cheaper flights and hotel. King and halibut are close to shore.  Obviously that's awful close.  Weather can be iffy.
2) Mid September.  Getting towards off season after Labor Day.  Should be halibut around.  Kings will be just getting going in Homer.  Cohos should still be around. Weather can be iffy.
3) Mid June:  Prices are on the rise.  Kings might be harder.  Probably focus on halibut.  Can get ya kings from the "ditch" aka Ship Creek in downtown Anchorage.  lol.  Might get a few reds as well.
4) Late August: Cohos should be going.  Halibut will be around.  Still summer prices. I got "a" king last yer in August...on my halibut gear.  Some interesting river fishing as well.

Not sure how we would work the logistics of the kayaks.  Would your wife fish? As a long time contributor to these boards and therefore my knowledge, I can offer one or two spare outbacks  and a spare mini-x.  I know folks who rent them as well.  It's a matter of how you would haul them around as I am not sure what days I would be able to take off so far in advance.  My schedule is very fluid.

If you plan to camp, I'd pay the extra dollars and rent a truck so you could haul kayaks.  If you aren't the camping type, You may want to look into renting an RV.  I see RV's do it all the time, but I will say I am amazed they can get up the hill at Whiskey Gulch.  Anyone else from AK want to chime in on that? I could borrow or rent a trailer from someone.  At any rate.  Also understand that if you buy unrefundable tickets, weather can be bad for a week straight.  I would say with 95% certainty we will get on the water somewhere even if it is a river or lake.  Certainly there will be opportunities from shore as well..especially on the week days.

I am sure we will find something for you to do.  And I can NOT speak for the other Alaska anglers, but I would be willing to bet good money that others would volunteer to show you something if they were available as well.

Give it some thought!  Let's fish!!!

You just got an awesome offer from Rudy.
Dude -- you got to make it happen if you can.
Alaska is soooo fantastic and the fishing can be off the charts.
Get this off your "bucket list" before you kick it.
 You will not be sorry.......
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

I'm going to talk it over with TLW aka my financial advisor/boss/conscious but I think we would hotel hop our way up there with the Subaru the yak trailer and 3 boats as well as my grandson, my wife's little gummy bear aka her Rottweiler, plus my monster grizzly bear aka the dachshund (mr wienie). I'll pm you when I get some details and dates ironed out and hopefully won't have to pull my boat paddle out of a place I'd rather it not get shoved!  :o

You might be a little late for hotel hopping your way through BC. There aren't that many rooms along the Cassiar. Better bring a tent.

When I drove up here it was the end of September, and I was almost too late making reservations one month ahead.

Thanks for the heads up. Might not be going for a year or two but with two drivers we could drive in shifts, now if I could just teach my 4-1/2 year old grandson how to drive we're golden, we don't do the tent thing anymore we would set up the back of the car as a bed loooong before sleeping on the ground.

Look forward to hearing how it went and what the water was like.  I had my truck loaded to go...then checked the weather one last time--sermed doable, but still A little sketchy--and decided not to go.   Hope you had great conditions and caught some nice ones.

Yup.  I'm out.  I have a air splint on my ankle for at least a week.  Feels like I could pedal, but I don't think lugging the kayaks up and down the beach would be much fun even with the decent pain killers...

I took my friend out on one of my outbacks, and got to put my new orange outback in the salt for the first time on Friday night. We fished two hours that night with no luck, water was fairly calm. Saturday was a different story...20mph winds, and 3-4 ft waves breaking on the open water. We got on the water at 9 a.m. and drifted south to about 60 fow and caught our limit of chickens. My buddy and I had a great time, and I think I've added another addict to our group. He'll be buying his outback later this year

I made it out today.  Interestingly, couldnt catch anything on the bottom...but when I switched over to my trolling setup for kings, I couldnt keep the halibut off it.  Mostly little ones, kept  a couple of chickens.
