Not long. About 20-30 minutes out in the rough water, then we went inside and fished the shallows for about 45 minutes with no luck. The fish go deep when it's rough.

No chumming... ;D

Roy,

The middle photo really puts the perspective on what a big swell looks and feels like. Magic seaweed said the swells this afternoon in Coos Bay were 9 ft. It looks like all of you had a very memorable adventure! I spent the morning on Woahink lake listening to some live jazz playing from a concert at the park. Like Sunset Bay, fishing could have been better!

Yea, just seconds between taking the the first and second pic. Zac was over there somewhere, couldn't even see his poles sticking up. They were all of 9 foot for sure.

Happy birthday BTW Dave.

Likely the fish are still there.  It just that in the surge of the big waves, they are hunkered down.  It's hard to fish them in conditions like this as they are less likely to dart out of the rocks at your offerings and your offering are likely to dart away from them in the swell.

After sunday I think I will be returning my fish finder (not on the yak yet) and buying one with GPS. Being out on the big blue surrounded by fog and not knowing which way to go sucks. Getting back to shore with out GPS was easy. Getting back to the Gentle bay rather then some surf pounded shore line was another story (hence my surf practice post).
Enjoy the ride!

this is the ff/gps unit I have, and I love it.  have yet to roll the yak with it in place, but it does it's job beautifully and is relatively cheap.  The Eagle site also provides copies of the owners manual and a neat little program that allows you to "operate" the device before you buy it.  What'll they think of next?
