Rory, I didn't read the whole post the video looked so interesting. I modified my last entry but to make sure...

Do you mind if I share this on another forum?

I spent hours trying to come up with a solution to being able to see the fish, crabs, structure, etc. in real time. The GoPro is neat but you don't know what you're shooting until much later. Then I got a Cabela's catalog and saw these:

http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/search.cmd?form_state=searchForm&N=0&fsch=true&Ntk=AllProducts&Ntt=underwater+camera&x=0&y=0&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products

Seems like for under $300 you've got a very functional system to watch what's happening below, even a way to pan the shots around while looking at a screen. Has a video output so you can record if desired.

Of course, the new GoPro HERO2 is coming out with a WiFi controller that allows remote control and viewing on your iPhone or iPad but not sure how that's going to work under water.

I jad an Aqua-Vue, with 100 feet of cable an a downrigger adapter.  When it worked --ie, when I could get the camera lined up on my flasher and spoon, it was wonderful.   I saw a 14# blackmouth follow and strike, an awesome experience.  A lot of futzing around and pulling it up to adjust, etc etc---you need some zipties to the d/r wire, or else the cable balloons way back, as it's pretty thick stuff.  mostly, you go along, staring at the screen, watching jellyfish and bubbles go past, now and then go thru a school of herring, and rarely see a salmon.   It burned up in my shed fire, and I did not replace it----YMMV

Believe it or not, I JUST got around to editing all the underwater footage I shot this day four years ago.  Yeah, it's been sitting on my desktop that long.  guess I can finally cross it off the to-do list.

I fished lings a bunch this year, and I actually think there are fewer around.  That video shows the bottom being pretty much carpeted with lings, and alot of big ones.   I fished that same spot a few times this year and got 0 lings. One thing I noticed is that the kelp is VERY late in developing this year.  It's just now starting to show.  That's pretty much the key to the food chain, so it correlates directly to the fishing.
